I have a decent smart phone which i don't like to take out if i'm drinking in case it gets lost. The answer seems to be a small cheap phone but most SIM cards seem to require regular top ups which i wouldn't need if it's purely for emergency use. Anyone know of a SIM card which doesn't require regular top ups?

You can extend a SIM for months. Just take it to the store or search for the codes on the carrier site. It may cost you a few baht but better than letting the credit expire.
