Hey Guys,

Anyone know of a small city/village called BUNGKAL which is supposedly near Udon Thani? I googled and searched but cannot find it... My Thai friends often have different spellings........Thanks in advance.

In the Udon Thani area the only city I can think of that sounds like Bungkal is Bueng Kan.

Yeah, probably Bueng Kan. Some transliteration schemes for Thai to English are 'letter for letter'. There are two Thai consonants which are pronounced as the English 'L' at the beginning of a syllable, but as 'N' when at the end of a syllable. The last Thai letter in Bueng Kan is one of these. If you see the letter 'L" at the end of a syllable for a Thai word written with English characters, pronounce it as an 'N'. Similarly, I've seen Ubon Ratchathani written as Ubol Ratchathani on one or two signs. A Thai would pronounce Ubol as Ubon. This is why some Thais sound like they're saying appen instead of apple. An 'L' sound at the end of a syllable is just as strange to them as an 'ng' sound at the beginning of a syllable is to us. I still struggle with that last one.

Just come back from Bueng Kan province, stayed in Pak Khat, her family live in Ban Sa Ngo.

What I did notice on Google Maps is that Bueng Kan sometimes shows as Bueng Kal and when I enquired about this the answer I got was....it same same
