Pope uses word 'genocide' to describe Armenian killings

VATICAN CITY (AFP) - Pope Francis used the word "genocide" on Sunday to describe the mass murder of Armenians in a move likely to severely strain diplomatic ties with Turkey.

He was right to say it too and the 100th anniversary of the killings was the right time to remind people of it. So long as many powerful interests in Turkey deny it ever happened then other people and institutions with influence should remind them of a shameful episode.

Long overdue. Too many countries for financial or reasons of political convenience ignore the first attempted genocide of the 20th century. Rightfully Germany was brought to account for its actions against the Jews in WWII. Isn't recognition from the rest of the civilized world & an apology & reparations from Turkey long overdue. Bloody disgraceful...!!!
