I cannot play a DVD bought in Pattaya back in the USA :(

I bought a music DVD with fantastic Issan music on it.. some 88 songs.  Great music, low quality video but who cares.

The DVD worked fine in the hotel and on a different DVD while in Thailand.

Now I am home and I'd love to listen to it - but it does not work and I cannot quite figure out why.  I've tried any number of players, including a Daewoo player or two that I hacked in order to be able to change the region code.  I've changed it from 0 to Code 2 or 3, it doesn't matter - the disc simply cannot be read by anything.  I don't believe it to be a region code issue, but I am really at a loss as to why it will not work.

There doesn't seem to be any physical damage to this disc, and it absolutely worked perfectly while I was still in thailand.

Any suggestions?

Rip it on a computer. Pretty basic. Google it.

Think like a VC - fail quickly, try often

That's the thing, the DVD physically won't read - I can't open the file system or anything.

Who said anything about Thai porn?  Read before posting.

I know how to rip DVD's just fine.

The issue is that the disc physically cannot be "read" by any of the equipment I try to play it on.  I cannot open the disc, cannot even read it in raw form.  It's not an issue with playback, it's an issue with any of the DVD players I've tried it on (2 computer drives, an external USB drive, a hacked daewoo, 2 dvd players...) being unable to read it / recognize that there is even a disc in the drive.

Again, the disc played fine in thailand.

Any suggestions ?

When I read this I thought it maybe the difference between NSTC & PAL but dismissed the idea as being outdated, however......

"DVDs
The encoded video (MPEG2) on a DVD is stored in digital format, but it's formatted NTSC or PAL. Some players play only NTSC discs, others play PAL and NTSC discs. All DVD players sold in PAL countries play both kinds of discs. Most NTSC players can't play PAL discs."

As Thailand uses PAL and the USA NTSC perhaps this is the problem.

It may well not be but no one else has mentioned the possibility of how the dvd was recorded and as you said the quality was poor it could have copied numerous times on old kit.

Just a thought.

My other option, as the dvd is not even recognised is that it may be either dirty or damaged.

Failing these 2 thoughts I am at a loss.

In the beginning was the word and the word was "In" :ThumbUp6:

It could be a PAL disc, that is a good idea.. however I was unaware that being in PAL video format would preclude reading the disc, I I thought PAL / NTSC had to do with only video playback.

The disc could certainly be dirty or damaged, but there is no physical issue with it looking at it, and it's clean.

Maybe I'll investigate further.. It was only 200 baht, but damn that Issan music has a great beat..  even the slow stuff is moving, sort of like country.

Thanks for the tip.. I too am at a loss, but I may as well keep trying.  Not like I'll be back in Pattaya for quite some time.

Computer readers don't care about the PAL/NTSC thing - that has to do with resolution, refresh rates and pull-down approach.

I don't think it's a DVD you have - it's probably a VCD.  Try a few different computers and different types of players.

DVDs can be zoned. Most of the stuff published in the west certainly is. Perhaps the DVD is zoned?

Nah, I figured it out.

I took Cathay Pacific back, and items from my baggage were stolen.  I realize now that the disc became slightly warped when it was taken out from between the book it was in and dumped back in the suitcase.

So in the end, that was the issue.  It became warped, which I did not realize until closer inspection.  Oops.  Was wondering what the hell was wrong with it.

Thanks to (most of ) you guys for the help provided.

You should be able to find something similar to download.

Stolen from your baggage say wha?

Yeah, stuff was taken from my baggage.  It's a real shame, because besides the theft, my experience with Cathay Pacific was nothing short of fantastic.  What's weird is that they didn't take any number of far more valuable items.. they stole some stupid stuff.  I really don't understand it.  Oh well.

That's the thing - the disc itself is bootleg as hell, but.. the whole thing is in thai :)  My thai comprehension is introductory at best, so I can't really search for it because I don't know the name of the disc.  Mai Pen Rai.

there is a lot of Issan luk thung music videos on youtube... some of the popular current music from Thai bands like Big Ass (gotta love the band name) and Body Slam are also available on youtube - and when you get to one of the youtube videos, they will list others from other bands, and mix lists - that might tickle your Thai music fancy... also when I google "luk thung Issan music" I also get other web sites like internet radio sites... also if you google "pee saderd thai music",  you get to some music videos on youtube from this popular Thai artist... also try googling "carabao thai music" will give you some music videos by Carabao, a Thai band that has been around for many years that is VERY popular... and another INCREDIBLY POPULAR Thai musician who has done free concerts in Pattaya (saw one last year) is Yin Lee (spelling?) - this is her most popular song that was all the rage during last year's SongKran...

and here is an old but real good P'Saderd song called Gee Hoi, which means oyster or shellfish (or ?snail?) - but it also means pussy...

and here is a WILDLY popular song from a few years ago called Kan Hu by an artist called Ja Turbo... this song launched her career... Kan Hu means itchy ear, but it also means itchy pussy...

Retired in Pattaya, Thailand - arrived April 1, 2014... Ohhhhh yeahhhhhh... LiveN my dream!

Thank you so much for your post... I heard so much good music on my trip, and this was one of the songs that was playing everywhere, including performed live in the Esan club.

Some of my best memories of Pattaya are spending time dancing and rocking out in that club with a beautiful energetic girl from Udon Thani I met...  truly a blessing that I got to experience.

Thank you.

you're very much welcome... when I lived in BKK before, I was "turned onto" some really good luk thung music and I still have quite a few songs in PlayLists on my iPod that I use when I workout... another incredibly popular tune was by Sek Loso (a guitarist) and Bird (vocalist) a few years old as well):

and Silly Fools was also a popular band back in the day (a few years ago) - very artistic music video:

and Jintara was also very popular - with this big hit for her:

Palmy was and still is very popular as well... she is half farang (?Belgium?) - this song was very popular (if you can find the original music video it is fun to watch - she is very animated when she performs):

There is different DVD regions. Thailand is in region 3 and USA is in region 1.
So if the DVD you bought in Pattaya only has region 3 and your DVD player only support region 1 you can't watch the DVD.
There is region-free (region 0) DVD players and some of the region locked DVD player can be reprogrammed to a region-free DVD player

So maybe this could be a reason that you can't see the DVD that you bought?

You can look at this wikipedia page.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DVD_region_code

Issan music on Amazon ...

http://www.amazon.com/The-Flower-Of-Isan-Northeast/dp/B000000ZS1

By the song:

http://www.amazon.com/Isan-Slete/e/B000AQ2BQU/ref=ac_dtp_sa_nc_link

Thai and Lao music:

http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss_2?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=thai+music&rh=i%3Aaps%2Ck%3Athai+music

Also google for Lao music. It's virtually the same as Issan music, and the Issan "language" is really just Lao with some Central Thai words mixed in. (In southern Issan, it has some Khmer mixed in.) It always amuses me to be chatting with a taxi driver in Thai, and he gets a phone call from his wife. He immediately switches to Issan Lao. Then when he hangs up, he continues with me in Thai.

Issan singers usually alternate between Thai and Lao. As one taxi driver said to me, "We used to be Lao, but now we are Thai." And they have no desire to change that!
