Cheapest Way from Pattaya to Phnom Penh ?

What is the cheapest way of traveling from Pattaya to Phnom Penh Cambodia for 2 old retired men, considering total cost? We have lots of time, but want a safe trip. Cost of the trip includes transportation obviously but also the Cambo visa, tuk-tuks, and over night accommodation if necessary. We've heard the Cambo visa going through Trat (Had Lek) - Koh Kong costs 1500b while going through Aranyaprathet - Poipet costs US$30.

Should we back track to Bangkok and take the train to Aranyaprathet or a bus from Ekkamai? Is it easier, faster and cheaper overall to go through Had Lek - Koh Kong?

Air Asia Does a daily flight to Phnom Penh . I personally would look for a 'cheap' day on their website .

Had a look last week and found a day in march (can't remember exactly what day) for 1190Bht one way .

Visa on the airport is $30 , tuk tuk to town $7 .

The visa in Aranyaprathet - Poipet costs US$30 only if you are lucky and are prepared to wait! They will usually ask for a higher fee for the visa to be processed immediately, otherwise they will ask you to take a seat and it will be processed sometime during the day!  You may be lucky and get it processed immediately after they see that you have called thier bluff and are prepared to wait or you may have to wait a few hours!!

There are so many scams at the Cambodian border and the hassle is too much for me, so now I just take the plane all the time.

Coming back can be no better, I once booked a bus from Siem Reap to Pattaya and there was supposed to be a "Luxury Minbus" from the border to Pattaya.  I had done it before and the bus was actually pretty nice. However  the last time I did it I was the only customer at the time and after waiting 2 hours at the border, I was put on one of the "local minibuses" which was later filled to overflowing with some people having no seats and had to sit on the floor for hours. The driver also delivering parcel on the way and to places off the normal route and he continued to try and pick up more passengers on the way even though there were not enough seats for the passengers already on the bus.  I was in the back row in a tight squeeze with 4 people (the "Luxury Minbus" only has 3 seats) and they tried to put a 5th person sitting there but I refused to budge, which was just as well as the person sitting beside me had to spread his legs as he had a bag between his feet with two live hens in it, I joke you not!!!

As you said that you are "2 old retired men" and want a safe trip I would go with what  a previous writer has said in that the cheapest can sometimes be an Air Asia flight and it is certainly the most stress free and you know the visa on arrival will be $30.
