A question was raised in the other thread about guys being aware of how much money they have on them before engaging in drink.

Seeing as quite a few gogo's seem to not accept credit cards, I always make sure to go to a gogo with more than enough cash on me. And I continually make a rough mental calculation of how many drinks I buy. Maybe a bit hard if you're sloshed, yes, but still.

When I ran out of cash 2 years ago at a gogo, one of the service girls accompanied me to a nearby ATM. That's the best thing to do I think, have a staff member accompany you. And don't go walking here and there and lollygagging trying to find an ATM that doesn't have a surcharge. Go to the nearest one and get it over with quick.

You would think that the guard & the staff (BG's) at the bar would understand the words ''i get money from ATM'' ........& to make things worse, he was actually walking towards the ATM.

Only in Thailand!

True but we'll never know unless there was video footage and reliable eyewitnesses.

He may have been walking towards ATM, then again he may have been looking to run away.

" He may have been walking towards ATM, then again he may have been looking to run away. "

Even if he was, does he deserve this sort of treatment, beaten unconscious by thugs who are secure in the knowledge that they will face no punishment in a country with a corrupt justice system.

Well for one thing the guy didn't want to press charges against one of the guys (the others ran away and they're trying to track them down).

Sure people in these situations don't deserve to be beaten, but we don't know the whole situation. Maybe he mouthed off or appeared to run away. Do you think bouncers in other countries around the world would never assault customers for any reason. If so a serious reality check is needed.

How is it that many of us have never experienced such things in Thailand?

We just don't know the whole story.

Re: News Report Honey Bar Drunken Customer.

This incident has been grossly misreported in the media. I was in the bar when it happened.

The American guy was drunk and refused to pay his bar bill.

He became very abusive at the girls and cashier, using threatening gestures and extreme swear words at them.

The cashier called the security guard in the bar complex for assistance.

Totally unprovoked, the guy swung a punch at the security guard who was knocked off his feet.

Motorcycle taxi drivers from the local stand witnessed the totally unprovoked attack and immediately went to his assistance.

After receiving first-aid, the guy walked away from the bar complex.

Police later impounded his motorcycle and took copies of his unpaid bar bill.

The guy did not offer or pay any of his bar bill. No customers left the bar afterwards in protest.

The security guard gave a statement to the police and was not charged with any offence.

If the FB account is even remotely true then the guy gets no sympathy from me.

I don't think it's ever happened to me, at least not in a bar where I wasn't known and it could wait until tomorrow, but if I had to leave a bar where I wasn't known to go to an ATM I would offer to leave my phone or ID until I came back.

The only difference is, news reports say the guy beaten was a Russian.

The facebook post mentioned above says it's an American.

where?  not here...

Late on Monday Night, a foreign national thought to be aged in his mid-thirties, was beaten unconscious by Security Guards and Motorbike Taxi Drivers, over a presumed non-payment of a bar bill, even though the foreigner intended to pay the bill but needed to use a nearby ATM to withdraw money to settle the debt.

The incident occurred at the V.I.P. Beer Bar Complex located on the Naklua Road and left the foreign man with head-injuries. The incident occurred outside of the Honey Beer Bar at the front of the complex where the victim was drinking. His final bill was 1,300 Baht but he only had 600 Baht in his pocket. He informed bar workers that he would cross the street and use an ATM where he would withdraw the additional 700 Baht to settle the bill.

As he left, Security Guards, who appeared to misunderstand the situation, shouted at the man to return but he continued to walk across the road. One of the guards then struck the victim over the head. A group of motorbike taxi drivers stationed nearby were called in to assist the guards, who then collectively assaulted the man until he was rendered unconscious.

A total of 6 Thai men are thought to have been involved in the assault. When Police arrived, they were able to arrest one of the Security Guards while the other attackers fled the scene prior to Police arriving. We understand the Guard has been released without charge after the foreign victim decided not to file a Police Complaint regarding the assault on him.

Police are keen to speak with the suspected attackers as soon as possible but for now they remain at-large and will likely not be prosecuted as the victim refused treatment in Hospital and walked away before Police could question him.

I once bailed out a guy who didn't have enough baht on him, though he had plenty in Canadian dollars. The mamasan had never seen any before and refused to accept them. I changed enough into baht for him to pay his bill, then swapped them for baht the next day at a money changer. Make sure you carry enough cash in Thai baht, not just in your own country's currency.

If you plan to go drinking got to the ATM first and get enought money. Dont do as the guy did and go with a few hundred baht.
