re-sell my ticket

malifax

Recommended Posts

I have booked to return back to LOS on 28th Maarch from Manchester via Eithad, However I might not be able to do the trip, I can get my hotel money back but the flight ticket is non refunable. Does anyone on here if I can re-sell it (name change) I know a fee would no doubt be payable to Eithad but I am pretty sure its got to be some use to someone. The ticket is Man - BKK-CNX and CNX-BKK-Man on 18th April.

With airlines security the way it is these days, due to well documented event in recent history,I wouldn't think selling or transferring ownership of a non refundable ticket is something that they would allow you to do.

Does anybody know for certain whether airlines allow this?

There was a story recently about a canadian guy who bought 2 round the world tickets for himself and his girl friend. They split up before the trip so he advertised on the internet for a girl from Canada with exactly the same name as his ex-girlfriend.

He found someone and they went on the trip together.

Maybe try that option?

However sometimes, but rarely, airlines ask to see the cedit card you booked with when you check in, so maybe see if this applies to this ticket.

I doubt you'll be able to resell the ticket to someone with a different name.  The ticket is likely valid for 1 year, do you think you'll be to take your trip within that timespan?  If not, I'm afraid you might be SOL.

If you want a better experience with your "date"... read, learn, live the following:

Each ticket/airline may have its own unique RULES, but most US carriers specifically state that, once ticketed, the passenger's name cannot be changed.

I suggest that you contact the airline and find out what the change fee is to push the date of your trip back.  You could ask them at that time if you would be able to transfer it to your "brother-in-law" (I would NOT say that you want to re-sell it).

Etihad will only change up to 3 letters of a passenger's name on a confirmed reservation. This is mainly for misspellings. Anything more than that (even for a legit spelling error) you have to refund the ticket and buy a new one. Had this happen with Etihad 2 years ago.

If you don't use the ticket you can reclaim all the tax, so at least you'll get a chunk of your money back.

But with eithad the tax is generally insignificant

Some do for a  fee and some (more) don't for any fee. Read the terms for the fare basis and it will say. You might find that the fee for this is not much different for changing the date so if the original purchaser just wants to go later that probably makes more sense.

There is also the issue of the dates happening to be useful for the other person which is a long shot indeed (same as these posts where people want to share a cab to split $30 and the odds of the same date and time must be 1000:1).

It will depend on the booking conditions. Check with the airline

Taxes are imposed by the country so it will be the same for every carrier.

My mate just pulled out of our upcoming trip in February and sold the ticket to my brother, there was a $75 transfer fee as well as a difference to pay in the return ticket price as it had gone up a bit. This was with Jet star airlines though so the answer is yes it can be done but I'm not sure if all airlines are the same. The other option given was to change the dates and pay the difference in ticket price but it had to be for the same destination within a year.

No mate, try it out. I took the sample dates for jan/Feb. Selected 3 fares all were within 50£ of each other. Taxes for eithad were around 130. Emirates were around 300 and air India were 220.

The 'taxies' that airlines charge may also be included a fuel surcharge even though it is not a tax. This is probably the difference as well as any taxes payable at the transit point(s).

Try reading this 2013 thread about the # of phone calls this guy endured to get a refund on a similar ticket with Etihad (EY), but he did manage to get a refund less a fee of 115AUD.

http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/etihad-airways-etihad-guest/1457737-change-cancellation-refund-fees-blues.html

Change/Cancellation/Refund fees blues

Starting this thread because I thought it would be useful to others who might have to deal with EY's phone staff that appear to follow no specific guidelines in regards to changing, cancelling and/or refunding a ticket booked directly with EY, either online or over the phone.

I booked an economy freedom return ticket ex-AU that explicitly stated no change/cancellation fees. Sure enough I could change the ticket without any penalties. But then I can't cancel it online. This is where things start to fall apart:

Here's a final update.

…She advised me (as usual) that it will take 6 to 8 weeks for the refund to appear on my credit card. The fee was 115AUD and I decided not to haggle as I didn't want to waste any more minutes into this.

The surprise came less than 48 hours later when the funds actually CLEARED into my credit card!

So getting there EY, but gotta iron out the call forwarding issues.

Can I change or transfer my ticket to another person?

No, you are not allowed to switch names or transfer your ticket to a friend or a family member.

maybe right maybe wrong but thats what they state

Don't think you will be able to change the name.

Most airlines will have a change fee plus the fare difference and you can reschedule 12 months out from the date you change the ticket. If you need to change it again you can pay all this again and schedule out another 12 months. Sometimes you can get lucky and the fare difference is lower not hight and you get a refund.

I changed the date for my trip to the LOS next month a couple of months back and got a lower price so that covered the change fee and I did not have to pay anything for making the change. YMMV.

Did you book direct with Etihad or through an Agent?

On the Etihad website they sell three classes of Economy ticket:

Saver - no refund. £135 to change date;

Value - £100 to refund. £100 to change date;

Freedom - no charge for either refund or change.

If you booked through an agent, the RULES should be based on this BUT they can also have their own fare RULES.

I've a similar story of a mate who bought a round the world ticket super cheap and couldn’t use it. Another mate asked for the ticket and changed his name by deed poll and then got a new passport. The first mate didn't know what he was going to do and was laughing at him for asking for a useless piece of paper. He who laughs last.
