Delta Flight Delay Causes Plane to Take Off With Just 2 Passengers

One of the little things that brings me joy in this world is being on a plane that is half full or less. It's so rare for me though, especially internationally. In summer of 2012, my Delta flight to Narita was probably about half full in the economy section, and the premium economy section was practically empty. That was sweet.

After hours of delays, one New York-bound passenger thought that he was getting the private plane treatment when he boarded his flight and realized he was the only passenger.

The passenger, a Brooklyn-based man named Chris O'Leary, started tweeting about his amazement before the plane took off, saying how he got a personalized safety briefing and a one-on-one run down from the captain about the flight.

"It was definitely the most memorable flight I've been on in recent memory if only for the sheer lack of passengers to become bothersome," O'Leary told ABC News. "There were no screaming babies, no one listening to loud lyrics or reclining their seats or taking their shoes."

Although it seemed like he was getting to fly home solo, the plane ended up going back to the gate one last time to pick up a second passenger.

They didn't end up chatting away throughout the flight, however.

"He took advantage of the fact the flight was empty and reclined his seat all the way (and slept)," O'Leary said of the second passenger.

Apparently a lot of favorite airline when it has so many passengers.  :GoldenSmile1:

My recent flight from Bangkok to Japan started out pretty full. We left Hong Kong at about 3/4 full in economy and the final leg from Taipei to Osaka was only 1/8 full. Managed to get off the plane and through passport control before most of the first class people. Lol!

Back in May 2011 I was on a Thai flight to LHR that was barely 1/3 full. Got into the air, had my meal, slept across 4 bulkhead seats, and woke up just in time for breakfast! Absolutely awesome! :)

Good of the airline not to just cancel the flight, or come up with some bullshit about technical problems! I have tried that many times in Brazil with TAM.

I fly often between Bahrain and Bangkok, with Gulf Air, and more often than not, the flight is barely 1/6 full!

I am sure they needed the plane to be wherever it was going or they would have canceled!

I have trouble believing this flight will last much longer. Hopefully THai Airways will restart service to Bahrain (probably wouldn't do any better on the route though).

Why can't the rest of us have luck like that?

Canceling flights that have few passengers could cause ripple effects in the schedule of other scheduled flights.

Often those planes need to be in specific locales at specific times to meet demand and other obligations.

I had a flight on Cathay Pacific a couple years ago in First Class and I was the only one there (of 6 seats).

Two flight attendants, two bathrooms, 14 appetizers/entrees available, no wait for the lavatory.

They set up the pod behind me as a bedroom vs. changing mine to a bed for sleeping.

No more flights in F to my location any more, too bad.

thats a gem.

I used to fly with Thai from Melb to BKK and most of the time the plane would be half full.

I always found if I booked a seat with B or J, I would always have the seat to my left and right vacant and hence I could pretty much have my own bed of 3 seats.

Probably because most of the travellers are families and seat them all next to each other.

Sometimes even got lucky and entire middle row of 4 seats was vacant (on the 747-400)

Unfortunately Thai most of the time is just too expensive so I havent used them for my last 6 or 7 trips.
