Is South Thailand (Pattani) still a no go?

It really sucks that the stupid Malay Muslim extremists have ruined that area for tourism. I've heard that it is one of the most beautiful parts of Thailand. I guess Pattani Bay is a danger zone too.
Has anyone here ever been there and can give more info? :)

Not really a danger zone, there are many foreigners down there, but personally I dislike seeing headscarves.

UK government website:

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) advise against all but essential travel to the provinces of Pattani, Yala, Narathiwat and Songkhla on the Thai-Malaysia border.

Maybe many "foreigners", but very few farangs.  Last time I was down that way, the uni girls were doing ninja training.

Someone should send them a map; Pattani isn't on the Thai-Malaysian border.

Definitely a dangerous place for anyone to be right now.

Daily killings.

Yes, I would not go.  I started my learning curve of Thailand in several trips to Sungai Kolok on the Thai / Malay border.  I was working in Eastern Malaysia at the time.  Got speeding tickets almost every trip up there, but oddly never on the trip back!!   :GoldenSmile1:

Great mongering in that little town.  Had a soi, very similar to Soi 6 but seemed like it was set in a time zone of around 1850 or so.... Primitive but exciting and some really great looking girls....  Wish it would settle down.  I would get there for a trip or two.
