Taxi from Swampy to Nana Plaza

I have read somewhere the best way to get a taxi to Nana Plaza from Swampy Is to go up to third floor arrivals and flag a taxi down that has just dropped, and make sure he turns meter on? Is this advisable? Typical cost? Thanks. I would hate to have to hire private car for this.

I'd like to hear some responses to this too and approximate fare :)

Lower level taxi rank - metered - 240 to 280 Baht + 50 Baht airport surcharge + 75 Baht tolls. This is the rate I pay when I arrive around midnight. Usually about 30-40 minutes.

During the day I prefer airport rail link and BTS.

Depending on hour of the day (or better night) and luggage, take the rail link to Phaya Thai, then take BTS to NaNa. Will be around 90 baht total, give or take...

Phaya Thai is a long way to get to Nana.

Better to take airport rail link to Rahkamheng (15 Baht) and grab a metered taxi at street level for 70-100 Baht into Nana. This is more direct, quicker and about the same cost.

Never tried to pick up a taxi on the upper level as they drop off passengers. At best you'll save the 50 baht added airport fee. To me, not worth doing this as it's against the RULES. Breaking RULES is fun but better to pick wisely.

As mentioned in earlier post with accurate details already- taxis available on lower level. Trains work if you're not carrying baggage. Pavement and sidewalks are not baggage friendly in Bangkok.

Phaya Thai to Nana on the BTS is 5 stops and takes about 15 minutes.  It's likely to be quicker than taking a taxi down soi 71.

Edit:  I just checked.  It's 11 minutes from Phaya Thai to Nana on the BTS.

After a 12 hour flight the last thing i would need would be to drag myself + case on the rail link, then fart about on the BTS with all the stairs and barriers involved. And thats half the story if you have to further walk from your BTS stop, to the hotel.

Cab..door to door is a no brainer.

OP did not say how long his flight is or if he has luggage...

One can assume he comes from the States with luggage, but you never know! :-)

I've twice got a taxi (from the taxi desk) to Nana/Asoke & twice got the Airport Link/BTS to Nana/Asoke, everytime in early-mid afternoon the last 2 years. Every trip took roughly 50-55 mins. Taxi was about 350-400bt + a tip, by rail, maybe 70bt (not sure what the charge is on my Rabbit Card for the BTS, the Airport Link is 45bt

If you're incapable of moving your luggage between the Airport link & the BTS at Phaya Thai, you're either disabled or bringing more luggage than you can actually manage. In that case, I would advise a taxi

I did the rail once from airport to nana and it was a shit show. It takes a long time and even dragging minimal luggage is a hassle. I typically ust grab a taxi from the line downstairs and end up paying 400 baht and give the drive an extra 50 or 100 depending on how much traffic the poor bastard had to deal with. Plan on 30-45 minutes if arriving at a low traffic period or 60+ min if arriving at peak traffic.

You save 50baht getting a taxi from the top floor but some of them will pretend they dont understand the word meter. Now the new system is in place downstairs it is probably much the same. With tolls and surcharge your looking at about 300-400 depending on traffic. They will quote you 400-500 without meter and probably try to sting you for tolls on top of this.

Ive done skytrain before but usually going back to the airport, its not too bad but during peak hours the trains are packed like sardines, probably not what u want after a long flight.

When you say "arrivals" do you really mean departures, as in a taxi just dropped off some departing visitors now headed home and you would hail their taxi?

I don't think I would recommend this. At the departures taxi drop-off area they have metal fence-like railings and one-way rotating gates to allow people to gain access to the terminal but not gain easy access to the taxi drop-off lane. Interestingly, one time as I sat outside enjoying my last dose of nicotine before checking in for my return flight I watched an airport employee do something to the gate mechanism to allow a group of monks to go straight through to the taxi drop-off lane easily with their small bit of luggage so they could do exactly what you're asking about. For us, after a long flight(s) and carrying luggage I don't think attempting to circumvent their system would be a good idea nor worth the little bit of baht saved. If I can afford a $1300 USD ticket to BKK I think I can manage the ~ 400 baht taxi into Nana.  555
