Anybody having trouble cashing TC's?

Have any of you guys run into trouble cashing TC's in Patts or Thailand in general.

I've been to three banks here at home and they all told me they stopped stocking them because of problems with exchanges not excepting them anymore due to a high fraud rate.

What's the story on the ground?

I see I'm not the only one.

Thought T/C was long gone , Victorian times .. :)

I've never used TC's when travelling, but have seen quite a few threads on various Thai forums, & Trip Advisor about people having problems changing them, over the last 6 months or so.

Very few people use cheques at home, I use 1 cheque a year.  TC's going the same way, being replaced by new technology  ie cash cards

I use them when I stay at the Sabai resort on second road, there is an exchange place near the big C that  I go to. I have never had any problems yet. :GoldenSmile1:

How can there be a "fraud rate" ? Amex or Thomas Cook guarantee payment to the bank or merchant if proper ID is taken + all these banks and currency exchange joints call them in & photocopy everything before doling out cash.

I agree with wackyjacky. Where is the fraud? Counterfeit traveler's checks? Cashing of stolen traveler's checks? As WJ points out above, verifying ID of the customers is the accepting merchant's responsibility.

It appears that TCs are alive and well at AMEX.

"many banks even in europe dont change them"

You are basing the above statement on an attempt to cash a 15 yr old traveler's check?

Suggest exchanging at the issuing institution for a new one and report your success in cashing that. (where is the rolled eyes icon when we need it?)

I used to carry sterling traveller checks to Thailand as they are much safer. No problems exchanging them at K Bank. But the new charges of around 150BHT (I think) for encashing doesn't make it economical anymore.
