I'm taking my first trip from the end of november through the middle of december.  I'm not sure about booking a hotel for the entire trip ahead of time in case I end up not liking it or want to move to a different location.  During late november to mid-december will I have any problems getting a room walking in?  I was thinking of booking my first 2 nights at the whitehouse condotel on soi 13 and then once I'm settled I can look for a cheaper/better location.  is that easily doable?

If you're on Soi 13, try Sandy Springs.

End of November, things are starting to get busy but Im sure you'll be ok, plenty of decent guesthouses around Soi buokhow and Soi Lengkee area...

thanks for the quick responses and sorry if my questions seem newbie. been all over the world but this is my first trip to Thailand.  booking a room for the whole trip that has good reviews here seems like the easiest bet. but knowing me, after a couple days I might want to branch out and explore other areas, just don't want to end up getting stuck with no reservations and not able to find a good room.

Going into december it gets busy so all the best places will get taken, but you can allways find a place to stay,if i was you i would book 2 or 3 places in different areas to get a feel for the place. One close to Walking Street, one close to LK Metro and one near to Soi 6.Sometimes when you are close to one area you dont branch out as much but with moving about you really get a feel for where you want to be and want you like

Posted

What budget you aiming for per night? If you say im sure the good people will fire loads of good choices for places to stay in different areas

Posted

Book 1 hotel, that has good reviews on here, and the area best suited to you, last thing I want on holiday is packing my case all the time, and worry about waking up for checkout at 12 the next day

Posted

You can't really go wrong with Soi 13 for a 1st trip. Although the Haven have increased their prices after a refurb, I still think it's good value.

My Pattaya budget is perfectly adequate as long as I don't spend any of it

Not a good idea.

You will be visiting during high season, when most lodging is booked up. All the good places, anyway. If you walk in off the street needing a room in next day or two you aren't going to have any bargaining leverage. Any place that still has rooms available is going to be either very cheap or very expensive. Another problem with your plan is that you are not familiar with Pattaya. Location is everything when it comes to lodging, but you won't know enough about the lay of the land to make a good choice. You'll end up wandering all over the place looking for a room instead of enjoying your holiday.

If you want to stay in more than one hotel, that's fine. But book both stays as far in advance as you can. If you ask specific questions in this forum you'll get all kinds of advice. I would advise booking your entire stay as soon as possible. You don't have much time.

Finally, I am a big fan of the Whitehouse Condotel. The location is superb, especially for a first time visitor. You can easily walk to the go go clubs on Soi LK Metro. You can walk to Beach Road in about five minutes and catch a baht bus to Walking Street. You can walk to Second Road in about one minute and catch a baht bus to Soi 6. You'll be across the street from the legendary breakfast buffet at the Lek hotel, and steps from other handy places like laundries, beer bars and places to eat. And if you're the kind of chap who comes all the way to Thailand only to patronize American franchises, you'll be very close to a McDonald's, Starbucks and an Au Bon Pain. Finally the Whitehouse is a solid lodging choice that offers good value for money. If you choose to spend your entire holiday there you'll be fine.

Read the reviews on this forum and check the reviews on the Agoda website which is one of PA's advertisers. Be warned some hotels will charge joiner fees for taking a girl back to your room. Some hotels prohibit girls under 21. --You are arriving in high season so I would suggest booking a hotel or divide your time staying at more than one hotel to get a feel for a different area. Your time is very limited! Do you really want to waste valuable time searching for a room after you arrive?

Posted

My first time I did the research on here and like you Soi 13 is the best place to start as it's in the middle of everything. I chose Sandy Spring but played golf out of The White Condotel. They are both good hotels although Sandy Spring has had a couple of floors renovated and charge more for them. Not sure if you can still get the membership card for 300baht which will last for 2 years and get you 300baht of each not you stay.

I also not sure why you want to change hotels unless staying for a long period but then you get better rates for long periods at the same place.

Great Soi in my opinion.

Enjoy

Soi 13's - a perfect location for a new starter. Whitehouse gets very good reviews.  Good plan to book 2-3 nights then look around.

Previous year when we were there December it didn't get super busy until right on Xmas week with all the influx.

Others to look at

Honey Lodge.  Fully renovated, small pool, incredibly close to Walking StreetAgoda has insider deal prices if you log in.

Areca Lodge. Gets lots of good reviews on PA. For the LK area and Soi Buakhao

Posted

I used to book the first 4 nights at one place, and then use those 4 days to determine if I want to stay or move to a new place and then use the time to search around.  I never saw prices change if I showed up in person, prices were the same in person/last minute as they were online prior.

While it is high season it is better to pay a few B more for a place you like vs saving $5USD for the comfort/security of a room you might end up hating.

Is a bath really preferable ? Never known anyone to want to soak in there own dirt in a 30 degree heat :)

Also the water pressure in Pattaya is so shit by the time you fill a bath it's time to go home.

I made up my mind to stay at Whitehouse.  But only the deluxe rooms have refrigerators and they only have deluxe rooms available for my second week.  So now I've narrowed down my criteria a bit. I want a room with a refrigerator or at least a mini fridge to stash some food, and preferably a bathtub.

It may be more than you are willing to spend, but the Whitehouse Condotel offers a "Deluxe Suite Room," which is actually four rooms (bath, bedroom, kitchen and living room). The kitchen features a full-sized refrigerator. There are only a handful of those rooms available, however, and they book up fast.

If that doesn't work you might ask if the folks at the Whitehouse have an extra small refrigerator that they would be willing to let you use for your first week staying in a room that does not ordinarily feature one. I should think that if you're staying a full two weeks they would try to make you happy.

If all else fails, you could search other hotels in the central Pattaya area. A small refrigerator is a pretty common feature. A full-sized chill chest, not so much. Try the LK hotel chain, which has locations all over town.

Finally, while I agree that a refrigerator is a "nice to have" feature, you could easily live without it your first week at the Whitehouse. Here's why: Pattaya is far smaller than you think, especially the central part of town near the intersection of Soi 13 and Second Road. Everything you could ever want is within easy walking distance. Moreover, street commerce is the rule of the day. The vendors are literally just a few feet apart. If you come from a place with a car culture, this is hard to understand until you see it. But this is a beach resort in the tropics. Everything, and I mean EVERYTHING takes place on the street. Most bars don't even have doors or windows. They are just open to the street.

For example, if you walk out the front door of the Whitehouse and turn right, there are several food carts that set up shop every night. A tasty snack will cost maybe 100 baht. Why would you want to eat in your room? Around the block, maybe 100 feet away, at the corner of Soi 13/1 and Second Road there is a Family Mart convenience store where they sell cheap cold beer, and they'll open the bottle for you if you like. Every night there is a husband and wife team who sets up a noodle cart in front of the store, complete with a little seating area. The classic "bowl of noodles" with broth and meat is less than 100 baht. Grab a miniature plastic stool and dine al fresco with the locals.

This is from Mapjack.com, which I highly recommend as a way to learn the "lay of the land" in advance of your trip. Soi 13 is on the right, looking west from Second Road toward Beach Road. Note the food carts on the south side of the street and the beer bar opposite, literally within crawling distance of the Whitehouse. (Decent live music, if you like cover bands. Plus lots of sports on the telly.) That's the west side of Second Road on the left, looking south toward the Family Mart. Finally, note the moto-taxi guys on the corner in the green vests. If you're going someplace the baht buses don't go, or you're in a hurry (and you've got nerves of steel) these guys will take you. The fare is negotiable, but 50-100 baht depending on distance should do it.

Pattaya - Soi 13 V001.JPG

I could go on, but you get the idea. You are never more than a 90 second walk from a snack or a drink. You don't need to lay in supplies to your room. (Maybe during rainy season, but you're going when it will be dry.)

As for a bathtub, that's a bigger ask. Showers are the norm. And as others have noted the Thai custom is low water pressure and water that's not all that hot. Not conducive to steamy soaking.

If this is your first trip to Pattaya, I would definitely pre book your hotel. Especially in December when you plan on being there. You already found out that you first choice Whitehouse is filling up and you can't get the choice of rooms you want. If I were you I would get my hotels booked ASAP... On your next trip and I'm sure there will be another one, you'll have better idea of what's available in pattaya and the different areas you might want to stay.

You can't really go wrong if you use the recommended hotels on the forum. Don't worry Soi 13 is a great location. I've tried other areas in central Pattaya and I always return to Soi 13. I'll be staying on Soi 13 the same time you are so maybe we'll cross paths.

Good luck on your first trip.

I like Bunky's advice, personally I have stayed at pretty much all the LK hotels and although some feel a little outdated, they are still great in terms of size, comfortability, bathtub, fridge, kitchenette, balcony, safe, location, service and very LB friendly.

I did a simple check for the OP between the dates of Dec 7 to Dec 14 for 7 nights, the LK Metropole in Soi Diana and LK Royal Wing on Soi Buokhow has the standard rooms for $70 aud (about 2100 baht) and LK Renaissance Studio for $81 aud, I dont know if thats in his budget!? Havent checked the Empress as Im sure its a touch more...

Thanks for all the input. I went ahead and booked. You guys are right they were filling up fast. I literally saw rooms disappearing as I was trying to book them. I tend to be a bit of a butterfly in that I like to move around and experience new things, so I was hesitant booking the entire stay at one place. So I decided to break it up. I booked the first week in a superior room at the whitehouse condotel and the second week in an executive suite at Areca Lodge. Both had good reviews on this site and both are centrally located. And they're not too far apart so when it comes time to switch it shouldn't be a big deal. And the best part is they were reasonable rates bringing me well within budget and leaving plenty to spend on girls and drinks. Two weeks from tomorrow and wheels up. Getting excited for my first trip. I'll be sure to start a thread in the trip reports section and keep you all up on the blow-by-blow. Lol pun intended.

Ive stayed at the Areca and you will not be disappointed in terms of price, front and back entry, great pools, yes more than 1 and large bathrooms, pretty much everything you need in a room.

There's a great pizza restaurant right across the road and many other eateries along Soi Diana as well as many bars, you'll notice that you will probably not have the time to leave Soi Diana as LK Metro is right there as well!!! A good choice, well done...
