Pattaya Times publisher Drew Noyes and his wife, Warapa Boonsu, have been found guilty of extortion in Pattaya Criminal Court. Each defendant was sentenced to two years in jail.

The case developed in March 2012 when Dr. Michel Oscar Goulet, president of Thonglor Clinic, filed a complaint with police alleging that Noyes and Boonsu threatened to publish a story in the Pattaya Times claiming that Thonglor uses substandard equipment. The complaint further alleged that the couple offered to withhold the story in return for payment of seven million baht.

Fifty-eight-year old Noyes, an American, and his 31-year-old Thai wife have been released after posting a bail. Goulet, an Australian, operates Thonglor Clinic in Pattaya and Bangkok.

Well, the answer is not as clear cut but Drew Noyes' tentacles are deep in Pattaya, particularly in media circles. Among the various flotsam and jetsam, I would imagine that there is also a feeling on unease when a supposed untouchable has been flagrantly molested by the courts. It signals a willingness to clean up the streets.

But it says they have been sentenced to two years, then says theve been bailed?? Is that pending an appeal, thought if your sentenced your off to jail and appeal process is started while your in custody doing time..That's the case in Ireland and the UK anyhow..This will just allow him to do one I'd imagine...

Sure, anything could happen, but when people are convicted, they are convicted. I'm sure that some of the local wannabes hope that there is some way he can wriggle out of jail time (even though it's inevitable at the moment) by some miraculous diversion. He could slip across the border in disguise too. Anything is possible.

I would like to see him do his time as eel, not sure how the Thai legal system works, I would have thought like you do once convicted you would be led away to the cells.

But some things have a strange way of unwinding over here.I would not be surprised to see him not do any time at all, I think if he was going to do a runner, he would have done it by now/ but who really knows for sure?

they both got bail the same day

Good point. I thought he would have been locked up immediately and the appeal process would start from there, but it appears not. And that seems to be odd considering extortion is by no means a misdemeanor. I think that he's hedged his bets on doing a runner as he really believes that he can pull something off. However, after being convicted, he's probably now in a deeper hole than he was before becoming convicted. I don't think the courts are just going to "forget about it." Also, worming around so-called influential people will have pissed them off to some degree. I very much doubt they'll be lining up to support him.

Me? Well I'm definitely not a celebrity among the Thai scally community, but yes, I'm a native English speaker working in a professional capacity in Vietnam. It's a fascinating story for more reasons than one. Honestly speaking, I'm surprised that it's taken this long for the guy to hit a submerged rock.

While you have wealth you're still useful.

Posting a letter using his pen name Somchai, Noyes claims:

I see Drew's business has never been busier. He mentioned to me recently he has never been wealthier. His wealth grows faster than he can spend it. Travelling the world with his children.

Of course you can't believe anything he says....

That's true. On the flip side, the more of an embarrassment you are, the less influence you have. I would think that Noyes' wealth is likely to be useful at the sewer end of the scale, which is not really how you want to position yourself. That would probably be weighing heavily on his mind.

I think you mey be correct, but sometimes conmen have such a belief in themselves they can fool themselves sometimes and that can be what brings them undone. Greed.

Most of the pattaya media want a quiet life and they know drew can be a nuisance threatening lawsuits etc so they back down....Woodward and bernstein it ain't!

The interesting that thaivisa won't allow any discussion of it...he may have advertised there but at least PA are letting this and another thread run...

Well, one of andrew drummonds supporters who also tangled with noyes is a Scotsman based in Vietnam....

What's the big deal anyway....we're all posting under 'fake' board names...

More interesting is the idenity of BM 'tuk' who is Scottish, fancies himself as a source of legal knowledge, has a grudge against Drummond so people who follow these capers can work out the rest.

I agree with everything you and he says.

Just man up and tell us who you are.

I am pretty easy to find BTW.

Fair enough... I think I know who it is but not my place to 'unmask' anyone.... Although people with a vested interest should perhaps disclose it...

Well yes, because I find the whole foreigner criminal underworld in SEA fascinating and have followed all the antics through Andrew Drummond's website. It started off as entertainment but then it became like a soap opera. The whole Noyes story actually gives some insight into a world that I am not part of.

But I'm not really sure about why I need to "identify myself" on a public forum. What's the point?

Well I'm interested in the opinions and reactions of Pattaya local people as to what they think about Noyes. But that's hardly an agenda.
