How are young guys staying in Thailand for long periods?

Be an Aussie, no application for a 30 day visa, and as often as you want it all year round.

Then only an 8.5 hour flight to LoS and waved through Customs !

It really is great to live in Lucky Land.

If you are talking about the stamp you get on arrival, it is not a visa.

When you have enough back-to-back stamps, some of the immigration people will pick up on it, because it makes them think you are working in Thailand.

If I was in OP's shoes, I would do the Thailand Elite thing.

It's an old thread, but would be interesting to hear what happened!?
