Turning up w/out hotel booked

kredit

Recommended Posts

Hey Guys,

I'll be leaving for LOS xmas day this year (bypassing the drunk shambles of a family xmas lol). Anyway I have friends in BKK I want to catch up with and a lady in Ubon at some point. I don't want to really run by any schedule but take each day as it comes, grabbing rooms where and when it suits me.

Anyone done this? Given it's high season I'm worried places might be a little thin on the ground. But then again tourist number down, maybe I'll be ok. Mate of mine reckons "you'll always find somewhere, no worries"

Can anyone share their thoughts and experiences?

There will be a room somewhere but you won't be able to be picky

I work hard to support those on benefits! :Banghead2:

Biggest issue is being forced to change rooms and or hotels, will get very annoying.

You want 9 nights, 3 in one room then swap then a new hotel for last 3 nights.

On top of that chances are you will be taking bottom of the barrel.

What about price, do they jack it up when you're just 'showing up' ?

Not something I would do, many BM's do enjoy this type of trip but definitely not for me at my age. I do not think you will have a problem finding rooms and although very "high season" I cannot see given the "tourist" situation you will find plenty but given Thai logic if they have "slow" business many may chance higher prices I also doing a bit of research of cheap rooms was a bit shocked at the state of some. Thank goodness I have now my favourite clean, safe places to stay at rates I can well afford, anywhere new I always pay extra for recommended places.

I've done it before, all depends on itinerary. If you're hooping around, I'd book on the fly. If I'm staying for only a night or three, I try to lock it down before I get there. If it's a longer stay, get a room reserved for first night than first thing in the morn, start asking about rates and availability at other establishments. Nice thing about this method, you are not showing up carrying luggage. If you're dragging bags, they know your getting desperate. I've gotten some good deals this way.

i have done both...

staying at a good hotel with breakfast for a week is good then changing is fun too but in very high season your choices disapear.

Like you said visitor numbers are down, have the Agoda app in your phone and try plan one day in advance. Not having a schedule and going with the flow is great, exciting and leaves your options open, I would have never visited AC and subic on previous trips if I'd book my accommodation in advance in Los

New Year's eve you can run into a huge fee on top of the cost to book a room. Sometimes 2000-3000 baht.

A good way of doing it is renting a condo or hotel for the whole duration of your stay. One stable joint as a base. Then just have days/week(s) away and play your game as you want it. I do this as i usually stay in thailand a few months at a time abd it stops me having to lug everything i own around with me and i can just turn up where i want to with 1 bag and take the first hotel that grabs me wherever i am.

Easy. Just check agoda/booking.com

Enjoy your trip

I think this is the best plan if you are going to follow your plan. Or lack of a  plan !!!!!.

Jokes aside you should be OK as it is very quiet regarding tourists and I for one believe there will not be the massive shortfall of accom that is the norm at xmas this year.

Also good advice.

By the way do you still have that fcking one way system around the town.

lived there for 2 years and still found it almost impossible to get out when in.

It all depends on when you'll be hitting Patts as you wont have too much of a problem in BKK, Ive done it heaps of times with the exception that I booked my first 2 days and then did the ground work.

I dont know what some are talking about the numbers being down, there isnt a single direct economy flight available out of Sydney during that time !!! Anything available is a 23 hr flight for what is normally a 9 hr flight so as it is every other year and Ive spent the last 5 xmas's in LOS,  it will still be busy and prices will still be double or triple....

There's a thread on this topic that might shed some light on how busy it will be during xmas...

I did a walk-in to one of the places I usually stay at a couple of years ago in February. I was only able to stay a night due to how heavily booked they were. It can be cheaper to book over the net so yes, they do jack prices up and some will even tell you that it's due to high season.

My first trip I booked a couple nights at one hotel to give me some time to look around, check a few other places out for both rates and to see if I like the hotels and surrounding area. Now I just find it far easier to book it up in advance, never to far from the actions

I am trying to book. And my first 7 choices have said booked...

Yep this is what I was talking about in my earlier post, around xmas and New Year it can get crazy, a few years back I checked a 5 star hotel online 3 months before new years and it was $134 a night so I didnt book and I rocked up to reception on the 23rd of December to get quoted 24.000 baht for new years eve, the other nights were cheaper but you had to book minimum 3 nights! This was in Patong of course...

So its a risky game leaving it to the last second, there will be availabilities but maybe not where you want....

Whatever did people do before the internet, use travel agents ?, write letters ?

I just used to turn up in counties and book for one night from the airports hotel reservations desk and get a taxi to it from them as well.

Check in and then wander around looking for a deal and/or location, often an even better price directly from the same hotel.

As for now and the coming months I really do not see any problem finding "girl friendly" hotels etc. as quite a few places may well be "full" on booking sites currently but are keeping back rooms in the hope for higher prices.

I would suggest that guys contact the hotels directly it they need certainty with their accommodation if their preferences seem to be unavailable..

In the beginning was the word and the word was "In" :ThumbUp6:

I'm trying to book for Dec - Jan and I'm struggling to find a good hotel in  good location at a reasonable price.

Many hotels are already booked out and others have over inflated their prices.

I ended up booking online. If anyone's in a spot of bother Chaba hut has rooms still, well priced and top location

Why would anyone go thru the hassle of looking for a room in high season upon arrival? Do you really want to waste valuable party time bouncing from one hotel to the next trying to find a room? The rate you will pay by just walking in will more than likely be much higher than if you made a reservation which would probably include free breakfast each morning.
