Monitor lizard attacks baby girl in Malaysia

This is a dreadful thing to have happened.

Many years ago I spend most of my two years National Service, in the army, in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The usual habit was to walk around with just a towel draped around one's waist in the basha (hut), because of the heat and humidity. On day I opened my personal locker, which had a shelf at eye level, and the biggest lizard I had ever seen leapt straight out onto my bare shoulder. I don't know what the then world record was for a standing high jump but, although never very athletic, even in my youth, I must have been close to it. It rapidly scurried away and escaped via the wall and ceiling, obviously very scared! Not as frightened as me however!!  Ever after that, I always made sure I had closed the locker carefully and also opened it at arms length. The other three lads in the billet thought it was a scream.

Happy days. I had quite s few pints of the local  beer later in the evening. Just to settle my nerves of course!

I was with a barfine in Balikpapan in Indonesian Borneo a few years back and we walked to the bar at the hotel. A water lizard about 7 foot long ran across a pond and the owners dogs starting barking. The girl froze and then went hysterical. After I calmed her down and took her back to our room I found out it was the dogs she was scared of.

As much as I love all things Australian, I got to get me action of the asian persuasian.
