Crossing into Myanmar/Burma without getting stamps

OK I've heard about a guy up in Chiang Rai who says you can legally go over the border into Myanmar/Burma for day trips without getting stamps in your passport.  Does anyone know if this is correct and if so how?

I did a day trip to Burma from Mae Sai many years back (1993).  Left my passport on the Thai side and they gave me a form to show the Burmese side.  Went over for a few hours and then came back.  Picked up my passport on the way back.  No problem.  I have no idea if they still do it.

You used to be able to get across to Myanmar for a day trip to village at Three Pagodas Pass up past Sangklaburi though it often closed if the local authorities weren't getting on. It was a more attractive option back when it was harder to visit Myanmar.
