The Jolly Friar on Soi Lengkee is open again under new management. I had the tilapia fish 'n chips tonight at 169 baht. I'm not qualified to do a review of whether it was good or not, other than to say I liked the fish but not the chips.

Thanks for the news, Evil.

Chips don't look appetizing, and frankly nor does the fish!

Tartare Sauce looks bland too.

At JF I used to pay 149 for Fish and Chips and it was 169 if you wanted Mushy peas included.

I assume the fish before was Pacific Dory and Tilapia (never heard of it) is presumably a more expensive fish.

Palmers Bar used to use Red Snapper which was nice.

I would not want to compete with current peoples favourite "Every Day is Fry Day" in New Plaza which do a

consistently good fish and chips for 99bt. Don't know how they make profit on that?

But I wish the new owners good luck in their venture.

I think Tilapai are a Thai farmed fresh water fish!  I could think of better fish  to serve up!

Looks like the tempura batter from Makro to me

Same as my gf uses for chicken wings.

That is meant in a nice way, I like fish and chicken cooked in a smooth batter like that.

Chips I think I will give a miss though.

Still I will try it out when I am next over, don't like to diss something unless I can say I have tried it (food that is).

Correct. It`s similar in texture to cod and is a cheaper alternative, but is tasteless and not good in a fish and chips IMO:

I thought the batter at Fry Day was too heavy and oily for my taste. The chips were OK.  I can understand it's popular at 99 baht.

Chips just aren't chips, if they're cooked from frozen, only fresh potatoes count !

But what do I know ? :SoWhat1:

I ate there 2 weeks ago, had the fish in bread crumbs rather than batter, plus changed the chips for French Fries (same price) and it was a big satisfying meal. From memory it cost about 150Bt.

I love Tilapia, tastes great fried or baked, to me a somewhat mild tasting fish with a unique flavor.

Not sure how I'd like it as part of fish and chips though.

Yeah this is a bit of a let down for me too. Often a JF I'd just order the fish without chips and have a salad with it, or sometimes I'd order mash spuds & peas with the fish. But now at JF you're locked into fish with chips.

I may be wrong, because there is a lot of confusion about what fish we're eating.

Whilst there certainly is plenty of Tilapia about, AFAIK nobody uses it for Fish & Chips (bones).

Last time I went to JF they were offering the same fish as all the others for the cheap option i.e. Dory.

Dory may also be called Pacific Dory or Pangasius   both of which I believe are Catfish and farmed in the Mekong not caught in the ocean.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dory_(fish)

Tilapia is a Cichlid and also widely farm reared in 'fresh' water.

Apologies if I'm wrong - all I really know is that none of them are Cod or Haddock and all are farm reared.

It said tilapia on the menu. There were three or four types of fish at different price points, ranging from 129 to 199 baht, if I remember right. Tilapia  was the "mid-range" option.  But they were then using the same menu as the previous owners and things may have changed by now.
