While many spread rumours and jump to unfounded conclusions about the goings on in Thailand, an incident with a happy ending (not that sort) has emerged today.
Our good friend Clive, not the brightest spark arrived 4 days ago and realised he had dropped his wallet with 600 quid, credit cards and passport in the Taxi.

We made enquiries by phoning the airport and British embassy but both came up negative but suggested to him to try one last attempt & fearing the worse he went off to the airport to try to find out if the cabbie had handed it in.

Even just getting the passport back would be a result but low and behold all the whole lot was returned to him at the airport.
That Cabbie where ever you are you are a man of metal, God be with you, he had left no phone number etc so could not offer a reward.

This is 100% true as I know this guy who left his items in the cab.

It is a pity we can not find this Taxi guys number has he clearly deserves his number to be listed here.

I will see if I can find out who he is as I have a few contacts at the airport.

Recently returned from my first trip to Pattaya, staying approximately 9 days at Canterbury Tales…  Room 6B.

  • This is a budget guest house which was good for me as all I was looking for was a nice, simple place to lay my head… and to do the 3 S’s daily…  Sh*t, Shower, Shave.
  • Room 6B is across the street from the Canterbury café and has its own private entrance.  Must walk by a handful of lovely massage ladies and ladyboys to enter the building… which added to the enjoyment of staying here.  Always nice to see a pretty sight such as those.
  • Room was simple and a bit dated… but, clean and satisfactory to all my needs.  It included air conditioning and two fans.
  • Most nights I returned to room about 05:00am (ok it is morning and not night) so I can’t really speak to the evening noise in regards to sleeping.
  • Noise during the day was nearly impossible only due to the fact that new tile was being installed into the hallway leading up to my room…. And onto the stairs, etc.  It made it very difficult to recover from the previous evenings adventures.  As this was an improvement to the building, I hold no grudge as I know this was a one-off and was just bad timing for me…. and besides, most normal people do not sleep during the day.
  • In regards to Dave and his wife…. I cannot put into words the niceness and hospitality I received… from the original correspondence till well after I have left Canterbury… they have been completely and utterly awesome.

Not that my opinion means much to anyone.... but.... I would give the highest recommendations to Canterbury Tales for the budget minded traveler…. please do not hesitate to say hi to Dave and check out his establishment!

And... a very special "Thank You" goes out to Dave...

Just got home from yet another stay at the Canterbury Tales, many thanks for the help in getting a booking with Bell Travel, when my lack of a mobile-phone number meant that I couldn't get their online-booking-system to accept my attempted-reservation ! Dave is indeed a Star-Player !

I would recommend 2C (B400/day), as a spotless simpler (no actual opening-window) budget-room (but still with all the essentials !), its location at the rear of the building made it very quiet ! While 3C (larger & with balcony) was still well worth B600/day, and a view of all the goings-on in the Soi !

Both had slightly-bigger bathrooms, than other rooms I've used in Building-B, more room for us well-built types !

Hope to see all at the C.Tales again next Spring !

If you are looking for budget no frills clean, safe, accom in the centre of the action then clearly this is the place to go too.

The fact that he is almost fully book'd all year low and high speak's for its self.

  • 2 weeks later...

I stayed in 402 (D building) for a couple of weeks in July. It was my first trip to Pattaya (or Thailand, or even just out of the US, for that matter) so I didn't know what to expect.

The room was cleaned properly every day, and the young man and lady that did the cleaning were both polite and discrete, as I had a variety of guests during my time there. Dave himself was a friendly fellow, and I enjoyed a good conversation or two with him over breakfast, which was a decent meal for a decent price. Dave was quite helpful with his advice, but not pushy or "know it all" either, A good guy IMO.

One day while leaving fairly early in the morning (I am an early riser) I saw a few little turds (maybe another guest's small dog?) in front of one of the doors, I made a note to mention it to Dave so that it could get cleaned up, and then promptly forgot about it once I hit the open air. When I returned about an hour later, the mess had already been cleaned up, which tells me a lot about the time and care the staff puts into keeping the place clean. I figure in a place like Pattaya, stuff can get messed up pretty easily, and the really important thing is how quickly and effectively those things get addressed.

The room safe and other appliances (including the AC, which I worked pretty hard) all worked as they should have. A former guest had left some Japanese MILF porn in the DvD player, (why bother watching porn when there are so many wonderful young ladies available, I don't understand, but to each his own, I guess) I left the movie there. I dunno, maybe the next guest might appreciate it?

The bathroom functioned as it should, though the damn shower rod that kept the shower curtain up kept falling- pretty minor, really. The shower had hot and cold water of the temperatures I wanted when I wanted them, and enough pressure for a good cleaning. I made a lot of use of it, as I am a fat guy guy from a cold climate- my fat ass needed the sweat cleaned off me pretty regularly!

There are a number of bars and massage shops right outside the door, and the massage girls were all quite friendly (duh). If you aren't comfortable with the constant sing-song calls of "Maaa-sage!" or the tonk-tonk sounds of Thai music played at the bar across the street most evenings, it might not be the best place for you, but I personally didn't mind these things. There was also a laundry outside the door, and they were helpful in getting my clothes cleaned for what I felt was a reasonable price.

I think Canterbury Tales was a great place to stay, especially for the money, and would stay there again.
