Many People Cannot Access the Board from Thailand

expatdude

Recommended Posts

I'm able to access the board from home here in Thailand, but not from work.

Boardmember Dumsoda hasn't been able to access the board from up north in Thailand for many days now.

Just thought I'd let you know there's a problem somewhere with some ISPs.

Yeah, he's on True as well. Edit: what proxy are you using? Maybe it's better than the one I gave him, hidemyass.

ToT still OK, but if it's policy I imagine they'll get round to all of them in time?

Hoe much do VPNs slow things down and, given that they're illegal, can they be identified?

You won't notice much of a difference, I'm using this https://www.google.co.th/search?q=zenmate&oq=zenmate&aqs=chrome..69i57j0l5.7010j0j8&sourceid=chrome&es_sm=93&ie=UTF-8 and it's fine.

Where are VPNs illegal? Do you have a link? VPNs are used by most if not all large companies. I would be very surprised if they were illegal anywhere.

OK I should have worded that differently.

I am talking about the use of VPNs specifically in Thailand and I am thinking about what they might be used for and, if that was illegal in Thailand, whether one might get caught.

Currently there is censorship here, so I'm thinking about maybe defeating that, plus things like pornography and gambling and perhaps even working.

The words I perhaps should have referred to are :-

" ..............the use of anonymous proxies in itself is not illegal but how it is used such as to circumvent government blocks, to access Internet porn, gambling and other prohibited or illegal sites."

So if they wanted to the ISP could look at the traffic to identify where it was going. If you are using one of the anonymous http proxies that use http and often encode the website you are going to in the url line, usually by adding it to the end of the url, then the ISP could see what site you went to and what pages on that site.

If you use VPN then everything through the ISP is encrypted (from your computer to the VPN server) so they will have no idea what sites you are going to (unless they are doing some type of man in the middle interception which seems very unlikely).

The website you are going to will see the IP address of the anonymous http proxy or VPN service. Some anonymous http proxies forward your real IP address with a different tag, some do not. With VPN the only way for the ISP to know where you connected would be to get the logs (if any are kept) of the VPN you used. I don't think many websites would care if you connected by VPN or http proxy or directly.

You could say that you use VPN for banking for additional security if you wanted a justification.

Your browser likely records what web sites you visit so if you wanted to leave no trace use a VPN and then a private browser mode / setting that keeps no record of what sites you visited.

I am able to access the site using my buildings normal wifi, but from time to time it will not connect.  Seems to have started after the last issue they had with the site / servers (a week or so ago).

you know there was a big problem all across the internet last week, even sites like ebay were affected ..   maybe its not censorship but ongoing technical issues?

I was unable to access my own websites last trip, and found this to be simple and elegant!

Me too.. For the last three days I've been unable to log on to the board as I used to.  I have to go through VPN/hola.   All the other Forums are fine; it's just PA.

So is this permanent?  PA is blocked in Thailand unless you use a VPN?

It is not blocked from what I am experiencing here in Jomtien.  I am able to get in using my regular internet connection.  Sometimes it is slow loading however.  The error message is that I was experiencing was that it was unable to connect.  A completely different message from the regular messages when other sites are blocked by the authorities.  Could it be related to the board issues a week or 10 days ago?
