Qatar Airways Flight Scare

Hi Guys

Military jets have escorted a passenger plane to Manchester Airport after reports of a possible device on board.

The Qatar Airways plane was escorted in to land by the Royal Air Force (RAF) following information received by the pilot.

Greater Manchester Police said officers were treating it as a "full emergency" as they did not know "how genuine this threat is".

All flights in and out of the airport have been temporarily suspended.

'Comprehensive response'

It is understood the plane involved is an Airbus A330, which was escorted by a Typhoon from RAF Coningsby in Lincolnshire.

Ch Supt O'Hare said: "An incoming plane has been escorted into the airport by the Royal Air Force as a result of information received by the pilot about a possible device on board.

The plane was filmed from the ground as it was escorted in to land

"We don't know how genuine this threat is but it is absolutely vital we deal with the situation as a full emergency.

"As a result people will see the police and other agencies at the airport and on the airfield. At this time I would urge them not to be alarmed.

"Our response will be as comprehensive as it is proportionate, with the safety of those on board and in and around the airport our paramount concern."

Eye witness Chris Phelan, 42, from Heaton Moor, was in his garden when he heard the roar of a jet plane before filming it on his camera.

"I looked up and saw what looked like a Typhoon jet flying close to a passenger plane.

"I live on the flight path so I'm used to seeing planes coming into land but it's the first time this has ever happened in the four to five years I've been here."

Just out of interest, say there was a device on board, what would a fighter jet flying along side be able to do?

Was some discussion after 9/11 that fighter jets are not there to protect the people on the plane, but to potentially shoot it down if the hijackers intend to crash into a target.

Precisely. The fighters only role is to shoot down plane if necessary!

I'm guessing if I ever see a fighter jet I should make my peace with which ever diety I choose to follow 5555

You should probably start doing that as soon as a hijacking attempt is noticed! This isn't the 1980s, you don't hear about too many safe landings anymore :(

You won't get sectioned under the mental heath act for that. If you'd flown United then I might of had a little concern about your sanity.

    • Hi Guys

As many of you know we have been running now for 16 years and apart from one brief time when we were allowed PayPal, so could use the inbuilt donation function, we have tried to avoid asking for donations. We have certainly avoided being in anyones face about it.

      Sadly that has now changed.

The forum currently costs around $900 a month to operate. That includes Bangkok and Philippines but PA makes up the vast majority of it. This fee covers forum hosting, image hosting, notification emails and support.

Before anyone says "its expensive" please be aware we have tried for years to find better for cheaper - it just doesn't exist for the size we are. Also a lot of hosts wont Touch us anyway. Our current host is actually cheaper than the previous one but that brings its own problems.

      Moving on -

I would like to stress there is NO obligation whatsoever. Also, whatever happens the forum is going no-where!

Donators can CHOOSE to have their donation listed (probably in this thread or we can make a new one) or to remain anonymous. Likewise they can CHOOSE whether the amount is published or not.

There is no minimum, or maximum for that matter. ANY donation will be very gratefully received. We are very aware that many members are also having it tough these days.

We are still unable to promote/post PayPal addresses etc on the forum so would ask that anyone who would like to make a donation to PM me, or ask me here to PM you and we will sort out details via that PM.
