King Seafood Walking Street

(May 4th)

Wanted to go to Al Porto, but my gf was annoyed at the lack of a menu in Thai outside (that we could see). So it was back down the road for an early dinner at King Seafood. I like this place; of all the very similar seafood places along Walking Street, for me this one has the best atmosphere and friendliest staff. The food is good, not the best in town for sure, but it's a great location, especially if you can get a table by the water. There are two guys who croon away over the evening after 9, giving the customers a good laugh (you'll understand when you see them)... one half of the duo sings unobtrusively over the earlier part of the night. The other half works the tables before 9 dealing with awkward punters. He's good at both jobs.

Not many expats come here, virtually all tourists, with many Asian and not a few Russian customers.

The long entrance is lined with tanks of fish and various crustaceans, where you can select your meal. A member of staff will collar you on the way in as you walk past the wine coolers, but the wine menu is available at your table as well. Before you get to the huge dining area you go past the open kitchen, which is a nice touch. Lots of white chefs uniforms and shiny surfaces. At least it looks very clean.
It's not cheap, but considering the location the prices are fair. We paid something over 2000 baht for two cocktails, two glasses of house red, a prawn cocktail, sirloin steak and sea bass.
There's a very extensive menu, mainly shellfish-based, but there are plenty of alternatives. I've eaten here a few times and never had a bad meal. The prawn cocktail was a bit basic - wish they wouldn't sit a few prawns on top of a mountain of lettuce - but that's par for the course in many places. I would be happy to pay extra for more prawns than 'cocktail', but at least the ones that made it into the dish were very tasty. The sirloin steak was rare as requested. The steamed vegetables rather bland but nice enough, the baked potato and mushrooms very good. The sea bass was delicious.

The Tiger beer girl (see pic) was pretty morose, if she'd made an effort she could have sold me a glass of antifreeze lol...

Can't remember the exact cost, the night was an increasing blur from that point on.
