Fever,Fever and Sweating!

You might try a mild antihistamine like chlorpheniramine maleate 2mg

to see if it has any effect. Might be a low grade allergy that catches

up to you 10 days in. Easy enough to test.

Maybe you are just not suited to the tropics. Some people just aren't.

You can have an allergy to

Asian food : glutamate , peanuts ,....

Asian insects : harmonia axyridis , ....

Asian bed bugs OR the product used to clean the bedlinnen.

Do an allergic test.

First thing you should do is lay off the kamagra for a week or two.  50 mg per day over a sustained period ot time is not good.

A few years ago I had something similar and it got quite serious. The last day of my 2 week trip I had a spike in temperature and woke up soaking wet (not a great experience when you have a guest in bed). I recovered in a week or so and felt fine ... but the night sweats continued, every night. After 3 weeks I had to go to the emergency room because of acute pain in my ribs. Diagnosis was intercostalitis -- inflammation of the tissue between all my ribs. It felt like all my ribs were broken. Got pain meds and antibiotics and after week I was ok. But the night sweats continued.

After another week and I had a relapse ... temperature hit 105 degrees. Back to the ER, explained being in SEA and they quarantined me in a room with a separate airflow. I was admitted to the hospital for 5 days of testing and treatment. They did every test they could think of (not easy admitting to an immunologist that you've been paying for sex in Thailand) and had no positive results. They had me on intravenous Doxycycline for 5 days and that seemed to knock it out.

The night sweats subsided after a while but they come back every now and then. I still have no idea what it is but I suspect it was related to Malaria.

My money's on the Kamagra mate. ... I don't get the sweats  but it plays merry hell with my sinuses ....

But then again - I figure it's worth it .. :EvilLaugh1:

Yes I have been pondering that possibilty also, but my doctor does not seem to think so.

I have read up on the net and one of the side effects is fever or sweating but only 1-2% of people suffered this.

There is also a question mark over the generic brands as to how pure they are or if they contain chemicals that are harmfull.

I buy my pills from the clinic on soi Bukoua or phamarcies.

My Try Cialis next trip.

I had this too when i was smoking.    Now for 3 years ive stopped smoking and i didnt get sick 1 day in about 7 trips to Thailand

I think heavy smoking together with air condition in the room, car, gogo, 7/11 etc. is the main reason for getting sick

I never thought of this, I am a 30 a day smoker and yes walking into a 7/11 on a hot 40 degree plus day on one of my power walks must not be a good thing.

I am thinking of getting some tests done before my next trip and see what shows up.

It's a possability, but I hope not, shit I could not give up my trips to patts.

Maybe next trip I will try to make it around Oct/Nov when it's not so hot and humid.

There could be a lot of merit in what you are saying losworld, but my trips are generally for 3 weeks, maybe use pills every 2nd or 3rd day and change brands

Hi there markster, I don't get pain in the rib area.

I just feel as I am on fire internally and sweat like a pig, especially at night while in bed.

It comes and goes every 2-3 hours.

If I try to walk for any short distance, say from Dianna Oasis Resort to Billabong, which is probably 300 mtrs, by the time I get there I am dripping wet.

I was in a similar situation (but without the rib pain) last year after traveling to Bali and Singpore. The nurse practitioner at my primary doctor thought I had the flu but I knew it wasn't. A few days later I went to the ER with a high fever...had IV fluids and blood tests. Lab called the next day and said I had a blood infection, went back to ER for more blood tests, IV fluids/antibiotic and was also prescribed an oral antibiotic. Next evening the lab called again and said go back to ER immediately because tests came back positive for sepsis (blood poisoning).

Was admitted into hospital and placed on IV antibiotics for 3 days while getting blood tests multiple times daily...the infectious disease specialist finally determined the sepsis was from salmonella entering my bloodstream. Took oral antibiotics for 10 more days after leaving the hospital. Night sweats continued for two more months and still return occasionally.

Strangely enough, after my trip to Patts in Feb the night sweats started up again after returning home but I had no fever. I didn't have any illnesses or symptoms the entire time in LOS or after returning home. The night sweats eventually subsided  after a few weeks.

My advice to the OP is to see an infectious disease specialist for this rather than your GP - best of luck with this mate

As indicated by other posters, it could be allergy related, or even related to the weather, humidity etc. The idea that it could be a virus sounds quite unlikely with the facts you've given, e.g., same symptoms on 6 out of 8 trips, which go away when you get to the airport.

Check your temperature - is it normal? If so, then the fever could be a "subjective fever" - I get these and they are caused by sinus/allergy issues.

Anxiety can also cause someone to experience flu, cold or allergy like symptoms, including the feeling of having a fever as well as physical symptoms such as sweating.

Interesting. My infectious disease specialist (funny to admit I have one) did not mention sepsis but it certainly sounds like the same set of symptoms. I did get a positive result of a bacteria found in cat placenta. I did eat some strange street food but I don't recall eating cat placenta.

Wow...cat placenta?!  Your illness is probably being used as a case study in a medical school somewhere.

After researching sepsis and learning the mortality rate, I feel very fortunate to have made a full recovery. Most importantly I learned to seek medical attention quickly rather than "riding it out" if an illness seems serious or unusual.

The 1st time I came down with this fever was after getting sick after eating Oysters at a Seafood restaurant in Nakula in 2009

I had the runs for a few days and the fever hit.

Ended up in hospital on  a drip  with antibiotics.Doctor at the hospital advised to avoid seafood especially shellfish as it is

generally farmed or fished in polluted waters or left unrefrigerated for days.

Thai people can eat it and get away with it because their immune system is used to it.

Lost all my appetite and felt really weak, lost about 5 kgs in 5-6 days.

Was still sick for about a month after I  got home, mainly lack of appetite.

The things that change from home are the climate, food and water and the blue pills.

Somewhere in these things is the cause judging from  the replies I have received.

It had been almost 3 yrs since my last trip in 2011 and I thought I was going to be ok this trip in March/April of this year.

I thought whatever it was in the past must surely be gone out of my sysytem by now but I was wrong.

I will undertake some allergy tests and see what happens.

Cheers Wombat

I am starting to think the same. Thanks

When I started turning up the AC to 26 or 27 I stopped getting sick.

I caught dysentery from a restaurant in Pai. At first I thought it was food poisoning. 11 days and 11 pounds later I worked it out of my system. I did go to a number of pharmacies but they kept on giving me stuff for my stomach and Imodium. I had terrible night sweats and daily nausia and Liquid shits. Little did I know how serious thing were. Harsh lesson learned.

The one that sticks in my mind is "never eat at an empty restaurant". That's what my Thai guesthouse owner told me. And next time I should have seen a doctor or gone to a clinic.

I did that last year and also did what someone else on here recommended.  Cleaned the filter in the AC.  I did not get the standard sore throat, cold, flu that I usually would get.  The filter was a disgusting mess. The hotel has only been operation for 5-6 yrs, and I doubt the filters have ever been cleaned.
