Way I read it is a gold necklace worth 80,000 Bht plus $500 cash ... then again maybe my comprehension  sucks!

Why jump to insurance fraud as a conclusion? He woke up in the hospital. Probably tested left and right to ring up a big bill which is why there is no mentioned of suspicion of fraud in the article.
