Hi firstly sorry if this has been asked already but couldn't find it, I was wondering if hotel TV in Pattaya will be showing the World Cup games next month? Would def prefer to watch in my room than the bar.

If not which bars would be the best bet for showing most games?

Cheers

It is not a straight forward answer.

We are waiting to see what happens in other bars in regards to the license fee which legally every bar has to pay to the rights holder, some 30,000 baht. It is a big outlay to make. We all know, some bars won't pay it and yet still show the World Cup as some matches are of free to air, but most bars are unaware that you need a license to show those games in your bar or hotel. Showing a game on ch7 in your bar can lead to a big fine or imprisonment.

Ch7 and 8 has 22 live matches free to air, but all the decent early round matches , most round of 16 and two quarter finals are on PPV only.

Most of the time there are public screens set up on Walking Street and Beach Rd showing it "for free" with the license paid for by broadcast sponsors.

We are open daytime and so if we pay the fee, we will show repeats of games in the day. If nobody bothers to pay the fee and "risks it", we have to make a decision if it is commercially viable to show the matches with a license fee.

Either way, it is possible that bar owners will be forced to pay huge fines if they are caught. There are 300 inspectors nationwide who will be working with the police. Expect many of them to be in Pattaya, which is regarded by most Thai businesses as the Wild West of Thailand.

Like I said, no decision yet. Wait and see

30,000 baht is not really a lot of baht when you spread it over all the matches

Lots of games are on at very bad trading hours and 22 are on free to air, which means people will watch them at home. Only about 20 or so games on PPV and at a decent hour that may get any sort of crowd in.

Putting on live sports is one thing that guys who have never run a bar in Thailand think is going to make them money, but in reality, sports fans are generally bad drinkers and are never really interested in the girls. You may get a crowd in, but look at the money at the end of the night.
