Hi, me and my friend are thinking of going up near here for 4 or 5 days to meet the girls families, and just to save money on our holiday, hire a car and visit Sukhothai and Tak, maybe go stay in Chiang Mai for a few days, we are hoping to spend less than half as much money per day of what we would be spending in Pattaya, and maybe a third of what we would be spending in BKK, we stayed in Chiang Mai before and were only paying 150baht a night for a room in a guest house, definitely nothing fancy, but with the money we can save then we can go and blow it in style again at the end of the holiday

 

but im just wondering if any of you have visited the Sukhothai site, it looks lovely, looks like a nice place to spend a day or two, and i believe the mountains and waterfalls west of here are mean to be worth a visit. we will have our 'girlfriends' with us so it should be a good laugh, playing happy families and all that, broke the 3 day rule already, so might as well keep going, live and learn eh

Hi Magpie, yes the historical site at Sukhothai is worth visiting, one day is plenty of time to see everything. Not much happening or to see in Sukhothai city itself though. Si Satchanala historical park at Sawankhalok is also very impressive and fairly close to Sukhothai. Maybe you could drive up to the Golden Triangle and then drop down into Chiang Mai via Chaing Rai or go over to Mae Hong Son and see the long neck tribes, bit "touristy" but is ok. Scenery on the drive between these places is stunning, just be careful on those roads.

photos in my phone. As You see not

much people when I was there in december.

I really enjoyed to be there with my Tgf.

We lived in Phitsanulok were is a very

venerated Buddha.

I'm pretty sure this was a place featured in the film 'Kickboxer'.

Thanks lads, it looks beautiful, very serene, (?) it will be a different kind of trip i suppose, instead of the full on stuff,

 

i said to my friend when we were planning this, cos we cant afford it, so i said isnt it better to go cheap than not go atall,

so we are taking up the invitation to go visit and take it Easy, but we also get a few days in BKK and Pattaya, so all is not lost,

yea i was up in Chiang Rai before and was tempted to get a good bike and do the golden triangle, this was on my first trip, little did i know about the dark triangle that would soon blow my head wide open, and my balls, ive never been right since,

but is like a happy sickness, ha, liberation for men too ha ha, not just women, at last i am freeeee

 

i will take some pics when i am up there hopefully make a trip report, will be nice to meet our friends families, ive met other families before and was made feel very welcome, and had great fun as i got to know them more, good people

 

most people are good people everywhere you go, you can never have too many friends :-)

Sukhothai is a great place and the temples are much better and more intact than ayutaya. Also check out Si Satchanalai (sp?) which is about an hour away i think and is not as crowded.

sounds like a great plan, I've never been to the site, but

have had many friends who parted ways in the middle of our trip

to head up north for a short time and then met up again near

the last part of our trip.

Every single one of them stated they had a great time, people were

more friendly, costs were way way cheaper, weather at night

was better and they would definetely go back again.

I went there with teerak in June - beautiful historical site! At the park you can hire a tuktuk to drive you through it. After negotiating we agreed on 400B. Alternatively you can rent bicycles or scooters, but this was good. Driver stops whenever you want, and waits for you till you've seen every monument. I think renting a scooter costs 100-150 B. I don't recommend bicycling in the heat ;)

I can recommend the Riverview hotel. Old, but clean and airco and bathroom. We had a room there for 2 nights, 300 B/night (they asked 350 )!!!

Wow the Riverview! I think that was the hote I stayed at in 1994, and I thought it was old then.

One of the best places I've been in Thailand. I like it much more than Chang Mai.

Sawankalok has a small but very nice National Museum, exhibiting fine pottery. Good for a short stop. Also good food in the center.

 

Si Satchanalai is a Laos place, people were deported there in the early 19th century. Around the park they have some kilns and you can visited some excavation sites. Worth it. Also she pottery is nice as a souvenir.

 

I like the Satchanalai park better than Sukkothai.

 

If anyone has time, there is also a nice Historical Park at Kampang Phet, about 1 hr by bus South of Sukkothai. The Pakr is VERY nice and not overrun. Accommodation in KP is cheap as long as you dont take the room service FS.
