Sunday Buffet at Dicey Reilly's

Evil Penevil

Recommended Posts

The Sunday dinner buffet at Dicey Reilly's on 2nd Road in front of the Marriott hotel was good value for money at 350 baht. Roast beef, turkey, roast pork, veggies (roast potatoes, roast pumpkin, cauliflower gratin, Brussels sprouts), plus beef stew, a salad bar, small cakes and fruit. The food was fresh and the buffet bowls were topped up regularly. Drinks were a bit expensive if you didn't get a Happy Hour special.

Thanks, Evil. Looks good. What's the timing?

I don't really know. I've always gone mid-to-late afternoon, but I'd imagine it starts about noon. I have no idea how long it lasts, but will ask next time I go there (maybe tonight for the beer-and-burger special). I couldn't find the answer on Dicey Reilly's Web site).

It's been over a year since I did the first review of Dicey Reilly's Sunday carvery, so time for an update  I've had the carvery a half-dozen times in the past 14 months and the quality of the food is as good as ever.  It's not the cheapest, but still good value for money in terms of the quantity and quality of the food.  It's available between 12 noon and 4 pm on Sundays.

post-9139-0-73988600-1437937720.jpg

The menu has been remarkably consistence as well, with very little change in the carvery meats or sides.  The layout of the buffet tables is a bit different, but the most note-worthy change has been in the price. It now costs 399 baht , up from 350 baht in April, 2014.

post-9139-0-58958200-1437937848.jpg

Dicey's has a a spacious dining area, plenty of TVs tuned to sports events and a good air conditioning system. `It's a pleasant place to  have a meal, but the food is the really important factor and DR doesn't fall short in that respect.

Turkey, roast beef and roast pork are the carvery's anchors.  They are all high quality and cooked properly.  They come with a slew of condiments: horseradish sauce, several kinds of mustard, apple sauce and cranberry sauce.

post-9139-0-02584800-1437939116.jpg

The turkey wasn't dry; the beef had that the right pink color and the pork cooked through but juicy.  The meat is sliced to order.

post-9139-0-04209300-1437938254.jpg

The Yorkshire pudding is among the best I've had in Pattaya.  It was light and crisp, but not overcooked.  The gravy packed a lot of flavor.

post-9139-0-19765800-1437939395.jpg

There were seven warm side dishes.  The Brussels sprouts with peas, carrots, corn, onion and bits of bacon were delicious.

post-9139-0-79319400-1437939546.jpg

The cauliflower with cheese sauce and roast potatoes are also good.

post-9139-0-50564500-1437939724.jpg

I could have made a separate meal of the cottage pie and pasta.  Plenty of flavor in both.

I'm putting it on my calendar for when I get back!  Looks freakin' GREAT to me!

Did I see some desserts in the photos?

I am a pig/glutton for punishment, and a little "sweetness" always seems to be a nice nice way to finish gorging myself!  (and then I'm on the baht bus and back to my room for a mid-afternoon nap!  555555)

The ancient art of carvery and Yorkshire puddings. For me it's the something for the grannies. For not changing the menu is the same all the way. For 400bht you can have a single meals + drinks way better than this buffet and still not be hungry anymore.

The carvery also includes a salad bar ...

post-9139-0-81530500-1437965390.jpg

which I didn't sample because there was so much other stuff to eat.  It it looked very fresh and the staff kept the bowls and trays well-filled.

post-9139-0-85873400-1437965515.jpg

One nice touch was a wooden salad bowl in case a customer wanted to mix and dress his or her own Caesar Salad.

post-9139-0-49285300-1437965453.jpg

There's also a dessert table with assorted cakes and fruits.  I did feel a bit sorry for the singer, as no one seemed to pay him much attention.

The bread pudding is fantastic and comes with custard or simple syrup sauce.

In terms of the quality and variety of the food, Dicey Reilly's has one of the better Sunday carveries in town.  The staff knows how to maintain a buffet, with everything kept warm and fresh and the serving dishes/trays always replenished. The fact that the buffet runs a limited time (12 noon to 4 pm) is also a factor in its favor, as almost all warm foods except stews and similar begin to lose flavor after standing a few hours.

On the downside,  there isn't much food that will appeal to most TGs.  Som tam on the salad table is the only real Thai dish. A lot of farang will also miss lamb.  Drinks aren't  cheap, with a bottle of SML running 149 baht.  While the cost of the carvery is 399 baht, total cost with a drink and tip will run you between 550 and 600 baht.  Well worth the money, but you can eat a Sunday lunch nearby for about half that.

That really does look very nice and thanks for going to the efforts you have in letting people know what's there.

I adore roast potatoes and I only saw what looked like chunky chips, are more traditional roast potatoes available?

For me the negatives which would likely put me off going are the live music (give me quiet background music in a restaurant), potential lack of traditional roast potatoes and the overall cost with the drink, although I usually only drink water when eating.

The positives are obvious, with special mention to the meats and the dazzling array of afters. Another positive is that there is not much which might appeal to Thais, some things are better enjoyed alone or with farang friends, not Thais.

Is that the custard in the square bowl pictured above, or (hopefully) is custard available in a jug which you can pour?

Scent from my anus using crapatalk

It all looks delicious. You just don't get enough sprouts in Patts.

Trouble is, I usually eat about half my normal intake when in LOS (because of the heat?).

I just wouldn't get my money's worth from a 400 Baht buffet.

I agree with Roger on the live music as a negative.

Why do pubs, especially in UK, think we need to have crap music blasted at us all the time?

Give me quiet background music, or even that precious thing........silence.

Yes, I was also a bit surprised at the roast potatoes. They were good, crispy outside and fluffy inside, but as you say, looked more like super chunky chips than traditional roast potatoes. It's possible they were cut that way for uniform size and to reduce cooking time.

IMG_6081a.jpg

The custard for the bread pudding is in the square bowl in the pic, not in a pitcher.

The food at this buffet is pretty good. The price has gone from 300B to 400B in the last couple of years and now I find it a bit overpriced compared to what else is available.

My main objections are that the warm dishes are just that: only warm. Or should I say barely warm. I would like them to be a lot hotter.

Cakes look better than they taste, unlike those at the Hilton for example.

Those "roast pototatoes" pictured look more like frozen home fries than real roast potatoes. When I went I dont think they looked like that at all.

But the real killer is the cost of water: 80B for a small bottle that must cost them all of 5B to buy. That was a couple of years ago. For all I know it's even more now. This is just plain silly. It's a mediocre pub in Pattaya, not a 3* Michelin place in the West End of London.

I agree with evil - the Sunday Roast at Dicey Reilly's is great. I just went there today around 2pm and it wasn't crowded. Several tables available. I tried all 3 roast offerings; beef, Turkey & pork. They were nicely cooked & they carve them on the spot, so the mast isn't dried out. Plenty of condiments, in assign to the gravy. Yorkshire pudding was very good & the gravy was tasty. Price if the buffet was 399, but with a soda & vat, total was around 470. Worth the price, for me.

I tried this on my last trip and was pleasantly surprised how good it was. I was on the other side of the restaurant from the buffet so it was pretty quiet regarding the music. The beef was excellent and loved the desert offerings as well.

Time for an update on Dicey Reilly's Sunday carvery at 399 baht. Not much has changed since my first review a couple of years ago. It remains one of the better carveries in Pattaya and well worth the 399 baht.

post-9139-0-82913200-1466974824.jpg

It's a comfortable restaurant with good A/C. It's also rather quiet and seldom has a lot of customers, which makes it a good place both to have Sunday dinner and to watch sports events.

post-9139-0-61446900-1466974826.jpg

In terms of the food at the Sunday carvery, it's still as good as ever. In fact, I could simply repeat the comments I made in 2014 and 2015. The buffet offers roast beef, turkey and pork, as well as Yorkshire pudding, gravy and veggies (roast potatoes, mashed potatoes, roast pumpkin, cauliflower gratin, peas), plus cottage pie, fried chicken, soup, a salad bar, small cakes, fruit and my favorite, bread pudding with custard sauce. The food was fresh, prepared well and kept hot while the buffet bowls were topped up regularly. The only new addition to the buffet was a station where dessert crepes were prepared.

Drinks were a bit expensive, with a SML costing 149 baht and a bottle of water 80 baht. Like all buffets, it's best to get there as early as possible and Dicey Reilly's carvery runs between noon and 4 p.m. on Sundays.

The salad bar, which has a large wooden bowl in which you can mix and dress your own salad.

My first plate, heavy on the turkey.  I love turkey with cranberry sauce and there aren't too many places in Pattaya where you can get it on a regular basis.

Bottom line:  I've been to Dicey Reilly's Sunday carvery many times and I'll keep going back, more for the roast  turkey than anything else.

GREAT review, EP!

I'm booked at the Marriott and arriving on a Sunday (after spending my first night in BKK), so I will now make sure that I get there WELL before the 4 p.m. shut down.

Thanks!

It looks like they have taken one of my previous complaints to heart as the food warmers shown are completely different to the type they used to use for all hot (warm) dishes. Previously they just had a candle burning below the earthenware dish and the food stayed basically cold. I suspect that the new ones work much better.

I would say my remaining objections are still the ridiculously overpriced drinks (80B for water is nothing short of an insult) and the fairly poor selection of meats (turkey is boring and Thai roast beef rarely worth bothering with). Do the desserts taste any better than they used to?

I only ever eat the bread pudding and it's always been good.  Next time I'll try the crepes.  I'm not a fan of the cakes, even when they are good, so I'm the wrong one toask about any improvements on that front.

One of the best Sunday buffets in Pattaya, would be nice if they added Roast Lamb.

But drink prices are a piss take, missus had a small Guinness & a water last time we were there, 165 plus 80=245, total piss take.
