Jet Lag

Featured Replies

Having just replied to a topic about jet lag it has just occured to me to ask fellow Boardies who have done both direct and indirect flights if the jet lag is worse after an indirect flight? My intuition is that jet lag would be worse after an indirect flight but maybe the extra rest in between flights may help with the time zone adjustment.

I've never noticed a difference in jetlag between direct and nondirect. I do prefer nondirect flights since you can get off the plane for an hour or so. Otherwise, I'd be stuck on a plane for 18 hours straight to get to BKK.

Having done both i like the indirect flight where you got off and could streach your legs on the other hand if you can gt your hands on some quality sleeping pills get the direct flight, sweet dreams

All things being equal, I would take one really long direct flight over one long and one or two short flights any day of the week. If they ever start flying IAD-BKK I'll be the first one on. 17 hours nonstop beats 24 hours with two plane changes and layovers hands down.

But back to the jet lag, I don't think it matters, your body is pretty messed up after a 12 hour flight, I don't think that a few hours on top of that will do much harm.

i think the key to flying is leaving at midnight, then that way you can sleep. also, pop a xanex. i sleep like a champ and wake up when i land.

I prefer to get off and have a walk around but most peeps I know go direct.

I really prefer a walk around and from the U.K. the Gulf states are about half way.

I wouldn`t say the jet lag is any better but it does break the monotony up.

Paul.

I dont think it makes much differance.

I guess the advantage of indirect flights is that you get to get off for a bit and stretch the legs which is a welcome break (as long as the stop over isnt too long).

The dissadvantage is thet it takes longer to get there.

I prefer direct flights, im used to long haul flights with my work and prefer to get there in one go.

The jet lag comes from moving through time zones which fucks your body clock up, indirect or direct you will still travel through the same time zones. Its all to do with your Melatonin levels. you can get Malatonin tablets, take one when you get to room and you will sleep for about 12 hours. You might miss some of the fun though.

You can also take one when you get on the flight to ensure a good kip, only good for 8 hrs or more though.

In UK they are available on Perscription Only but they can be purchased on the net, I presume that they can be purchased in Thai Pharmacies.

Cheers Mick

[p.m.a]

i have only ever flown direct and dont ever notice jet lag as i just stay up till 3/4am (thai time) every day, is there any point in trying to adjust to thai time zone when there is soi6?Having said that this year i am planning to fly london - dubai - bangkok so will be interesting to see if that is a more pleasant trip....up date you all in december....bet you cant wait! LOL

I would never attend a non-stop flight. Sometimes you want the bird to land. :)

No seriously: Why deal with indirect flights? I've got 11 hours to LOS. Usually I take the first meal, some water and take some Benzodiazepines or Melatonin and sleep for about 8 hours. It's about 8am when I'm through the customs, so I don't have much of a jetlag.

Some times ago I had to fly weekly long distances. I found that Modafinil kills the jet lag, but actually there are can be some serious side effects.

If you are not flying each week, I'd just deal with the jet lag. It isn't too bad. :D

I am sure each body is different.

My opinion is that Direct is better for me & I pop a sleeping pill and have 7 to 10 hours sleep and wake up just before touch down its great and eassy.

I did try indirect 2 times and it fucked me up and yes my jet lag was much worse.

My secret is do not drink booze on the flight & when you get to Thailand do not touch Booze for 48 hours and then I go like a Fucking Rocket.

Great thread & its good to see how guys handle the Jet lag.

Thai Tony.

I fly indirect because I have to fly from Manchester. Speaking about myself I think indirect could be worse than direct because when I'm in transit I always go straight to the bar and have a few beers :GiveBeer1: :Drink4: :Chokdee3:

Even if I wanted to, I couldn't fly direct from my home airport. It took me 27 hours to get here with one stop in the States and then another in Tokyo and was absolute hell but I wasn't jet lagged one bit.

I find that when I'm gaining time, I'm fine but when I fly back and lose time I'm an absolutely tired, cranky mess for the first couple days!

When is it my turn in the barrel?

I like indirect flights as you get the chance to have a fag while waiting for your next flight depending on the airport you land, I sleep on the 2nd leg of the flight as I usually arrive in BKK at 7/8 am so I don't feel jet lagged when I arrive
