Myself and Alleycat had to stay here after the Majestic Suites and CitiChic were fully booked. On checking in the day Manager spoke the Alleycat, apologizing for the fact he was in a two bed room and they would move him asap, I didn't take any real notice of this until I arrived in my room 925, as I walked there in front of me were two single beds? now why had the manager only spoke to Alleycat I wondered? Oh well I settled in to the room, it was very worn out room, It really needed a makeover, the bath room was dark and although not exactly dirty it was Old, the tiled walls looked faded. I tried the music controls mounted in the bedside cabinet, these did not work, I turned the TV on and flicked through the channels, what no English speaking channels and also no music channels. I though oh well its only for 4 nights, then down to Pattaya.

On arriving back from our first night in town I had the company of 3 ladies, Alleycat had walked a head of me and approached the front desk while I went the life and waited for him, he came to the lift, but would not say why he had talked to the girl on the desk. The second day I brought two ladies back to the room for some afternoon fun, then that night I had another lady with me, on the third night I return to the hotel and was met by the hotel staff who told me I must pay a joiner fee, this I queried and was told no fee before 6pm, I reluctantly paid this and the lady I was with felt very bad about the situation. I ended up having to pay for her company on the last two nights.

 

Afterwards I discussed this with Alleycat and at no time was he asked for a joiner fee, I had encountered my first case of Thai racism, they had viewed Alleycat as a fellow Asian and myself as a falang who was there to be ripped off. Alleycat later admitted to me he had told the front desk that the three ladies on the first night were with him.

 

On no account should you stay at the Manhattan Hotel.

This was the first Thai hotel I ever stayed in (courtesy of Kuoni 3) back in '90. And yes, I had to pay a joiner fee then as well!

Don't take it personally. Within a group, I've been charged more baht than my falang friends sitting right next to me. Perhaps they thought I was some rich Japanese guy. I've read that generally Thais believe if one has more, it's only right that they pay more. Take it as a compliment?

 

Side note, quite the good friend of Alleycat to have your back like that.

Thats DD... I will steer well clear. I have stayed at another hotel just like this.... the Asia Bangkok Hotel. What a dump.

You get this a lot in Bangkok, where they expect flangs to pay a surcharge of a certain amount. I went to Poseidon body massage, when they asked where I was from I said England. When I went to pay for a girl at the counter, I noticed they we're charging me a 500b surcharge!

Should always ask before booking a room whether there is a joiner fee. I'm surprised a seasoned monger like yourself did not do this. At any rate, the last time I was in Bangkok the Grand Hotel (near the Ambassador, around Soi 7) was not requiring joiner fees.

All inquiries lead me to believe they didn't charge a joiners fee, I was the victim of a SCAM,

 

Will only be staying at the CitiChic from now on.

I always used the Manhattan when I used to stay in Bangkok - but haven't been into the city for 3 years now. Even then the accomadation floors were worn, and in need of a refit. However, I never had a problem with guests, or even multiple guests.

 

Sad if their policy has changed - and if they still have not updated their rooms!

One more hotel booked to a no-no. Thanks Colin for the warning and I`m happy for you bro that the second one was so much better.
