Anyone using a wide angle lens 10-20 mm ?

I'm thinking about getting a wide angle lens for my Canon 60D. Something like the Sigma 10-20 or Canon's 10-22. My main lens is the 18-135. My concern is whether i would get alot of use to justify the 20,000 baht price. Any users out there and does it give alot more options ?

I sold the 10-22 for my 40D as i hardly used it . Bought the 17-40 for the 5D fullframe and again it's gathering dust .

Depends a bit on the kind of pics you take . It would be useful if you do a lot of nature or architecture .

I use a 17-40 on a 5D mkii in bars and clubs where space is short. Some distortion which can be corrected in post.

I agree with this - only buy if you really need it for the photos you take.

No matter where you go, there you are....

I have a EOS 40D.

Cannon EFS 18-55mm 0.25m/0.8ft

Cannon Zoom Lens 75-300mm1:4-5.6 III USM.

Sigma EX 10-20mm 1:4-5.6 DC HSM.

That I don't use, I only use my Nikon D90 now.

I am about to put the full set for sale.

I would be happy to sell you the Sigma lens for 15,000.

Also I have a Nikon D80.

Nikon DX AF-S Nikkor 18-135mm 1:35-5.6 G ED ( new Lens motor ) fitted at BKK last year.

I am about to put the full set for sale.

If interested PM me.

I have the sigma 10-20mm lens.

Great on a tripod for landscapes or handheld for interior architecture or car photography when there is a lot of light but other than that it's a bit of a waste of money Imo.

You can get a lot of weird/cool looking shots from it but it's definitely not a walk around lens.

Chris,

Thanks for the price update, I did not check the price, I posted 15,000 as you had said it was 20,000 in your opening post.

All this kit is locked away and I have been meaning to check the current secondhand price and put them up for sale.(I have not done so yet).

I have used this lens and found it useful. I may get one for my Nikon.

I mostly use my 18-200 DX ED VR on my D90.

Having given it some thought I think it best to sell it as a full set ( 1 camera 3 lens) I will check the market price and list it here soon.

The Canon 10-22 is a great lens for what it does.

If you need a lens to sell a small condo, it's awesome.

If you want some interesting shots using the distortion at 10mm, it's awesome.

Horses for courses. There's a reason many people rave about the lens.

Wide angle lenses can be fun but their applications are limited, mostly photography where you want to enlarge the subject you're taking (like small rooms and such) or panorama photography where you want to capture more of the scene.

I have to admit having one and unfortunately, I'm not using it often

Me too. I have the Canon 10-22mm and it has a very specific use.

I rarely use it, and I have no room for it in my camera bag. Makes me feel bad when I see a shot that would be nice on wide angle but I left the lens at home.

It's dark, not sharp (specially on the edges) and has the wide distortion making it horrible for portraits (unless you want that for a specific shot). But it's amazing for landscapes and for making small rooms look bigger.

Here is a sample shot I took:

Different camera, but …...Wide angle for my Sony A7.. I use Voigtlanders…the 12mm F5.6 and the 21mm F4…(a Leica to NEX adapter is needed as well).

In that extreme wide angke lens, I wouldn't go for a zoom, but try to find a single focal length somewhere in the middleif that range, like a 21 mm equivalent for Full frame. For that somewhat smaller sensor that would be a 14 mm.

It is likely to be lighter, faster, and less distorting, less fall iff at the edges and corners.

I have access to a 24 in the firm of my 24-70 zoom, but that's far too heavy and bulky for casual carrying around.

Looking at a Fuji X body with the Fuji 14 mm right now, that would fit the bill for me...

I used my tokina 11-16 a lot on my canon 550D. Yes, it gives a lot of options.

When I travel I do take a wide lens, on my first trip I had a 10-200 zoom on my DX camera, since then I have found that you really need something wider than 18 for DX or 24-28 for FF. This is true if you are out and doing photography of the various temples and sights in Thailand.  For a DX I would suggest the Tokina 11-16 f2.8, just make sure the sun/light is out of the frame as you will get a lot of flare.  For a Nikon FX you have 3 choices but only 2 of them are going to be travel friendly.  I have a 16-35 f4.0 VR and I plan on getting a ton of usage out of this lens in BKK.

I used a friends Nikon 10-24DX lens for this shot.

I use a Tokina 11-16 2.8 on a Canon 70D and its great for landscapes and interiors. However, it's not great for people as it gives you significant distortion towards the edges of the frame. FWIW, I use a 18-135 f3.5-5.6 IS as my walkabout lens and by and large its wide enough in most cases. The other thing about the 10-22 is that it's pretty slow at f3.5 (the Sigma is even slower at f4) and has no IS so taking pictures in low light interiors is going to be tricky and the same goes for night photography. Be absolutely sure that you really need it before you buy, it's not really a cheap bit of glass...

On My D40 I like the 10-20 Sigma , BUT lately Ive for the first time in four years started to use the kit lens that came with it ,18 - 55 none VR .Ken Rockwell recommended this lens and I now understand why he did so much , ok its not that wide or long but its feather lite tiny and pin sharp ,  now having got used to that my heavy 18-200 VR and 10-20 Sigma remain in my camera cupboard,  and I am enjoying the little Nikon 18-55 very much , really Its going everywhere with me now on the D40, I like small and light better than I could ever have Imagined ..

Just an update. I bought a second hand Canon 10-22 for 9,000. It's a great lens for specific tasks but not one i use that often. So pleased to have it available but probably wouldn't have paid 20,000 +.

If you are talking about barrel distortion or pincushion distortion, both can be corrected in some of the better editing software, such as Photoshop or Lightroom.

In trrms of IS absence, extreme wide angles can be used at much lowe shutterspeed handheld compared to telephoto lenses.

And once you're aware of distorting people near the edge of the frame, you learn to move them closer to the centre...

Ihave the Sigma 10-20 and use it more than anything else in my bag.  For me it is a good walkaround lens...can do landscape, architectural and forces me to get in close and personal for street photos.  Always crisp focus without much worry

I agree. I carry around my Canon 10-18mm everywhere I go. But it all depends on the kind of pictures you like taking.

For the money I recommend the canon 10-18 because the image stabilization is a life saver!

I like the Sigma 10-20mm for the extreme wide view. You will still need your standard zoom (18-200mm or similar) so you will be carrying two lenses.
