I started a thread about being ill after exercise and many of the guys on here advised me to see the doc and get some tests, this I did and it turns out I have high cholesterol and need to cut out cheese and many of the other food products that I currently enjoy. However I will be going to patts in June and apart from the ladies and gun clubs I also enjoy the food, usually the from central festival pattaya or the big c, as well as the meaty snacks from the stalls around second road and Walking Street. Have any of you guys had to cut down on your treats in pattaya as the doctor ordered or have you  thought "to hell with it I am only here for 2 weeks" obviously thats different if you live there, I don't drink or smoke but I do love those savoury snacks can you suggest any eateries that serve good healthy food that doesn't taste like a boring salad. cheers  :ThumbUp6:

Cut out as much processed food as possible, when your here take advantage of the cheap fruit and Thai food, study foods lowering cholesterol etc, google is your friend.

What were your readings both for good and bad Lipids and has your GP prescribed Statins now ?

Were you also on a 12 Hour Fast before the test was carried out ?

I did fast overnight and he got back to me a few days after the bloodtest, it was however a quick talk over the phone, very early in the morning I did not ask him about lipids   and he has not prescribed me anything. I should have gone into more detail with him, but he did tell me it was not dangerous... yet but if I carry on with to many dairy products, chips, pies and fizzy drinks it could be a problem in the the future.

5555 For sure that sort of Diet will fuck you up in the long term but I would not worry too much sounds more like a little hint to take care of what you eat Matey as GP's now are paid to be proactive.

If it was High he would call you in for Statins but as this is not the case just cut back on some of that Shit you shovel in and enjoy you Holiday.

Some Folks will always give off high readings it is in the Genes and it is never what we eat but how much that kills us

I certainly will enjoy my holiday mate, cut back on meat and munch on minge it as less cholesterol,  and unlike those greasey kebabs you know what its made of. :05:  :Eat_Me:

I would definitely request a copy of the report. Total cholesterol can be deceiving. I am 30 with very low body fat, train 6-7 days per week, and keep a strict diet but my total is what some doctors would consider borderline (185). doc said it is fine as my good cholesterol is hdl is very high which pushes my total a bit high.

Most important numbers are the LDL and triglycerides as those are two culprits that will crash the hardware and ticker.

You do not want to get in a situation where u are taking statins as they can have shit side effects.

You should really try to clean up the diet and go back for another test in a few months as some folks are just genetically predisposed to high cholesterol regardless of diet and need meds to keep it in check. even more so if you have close family members that have died or suffer from heart disease.

I come from a long line of men who, suffered from heart disease so I am trying to do all I can to break the cycle. Stay on top of it now as it will not get easier the longer you let it get away from you.

Good luck.

Get on the Thai street food. I can have the pork or chicken noodle soup daily for 40b. Listen to the doctor, after all he is a doctor.

Just this week my cousin who is 32 and had a heart attack, the doctors say that he has very high cholesterol and needs a stint but wtf he's so young for that shit it's scary. Yes heart disease is very prevalent in the family but Jesus Christ he runs 10k 5 days a week and does weights and he's shredded, and he isn't a heavy drinker and doesn't smoke.

I remember seeing an interview that Bill Clinton did about his new diet to reduce his cholesterol after his stint operation, I think he went vegan, I'm seriously gonna have to check it out again because my old man and 3 of my grandparents died from heart attacks, and now my younger cousin almost kicked the dust too, shits getting real!

Fish Oil Tablets best thing to lower your cholesterol...best thing I ever did, take 2 a day.

Go to fachinos pharmacy on Pattaya Nua. Buy a bottle of 1000 50mg niacin for 400B. These will help with your bad cholesterol, and help clean your arteries.

I do take cod liver oil tablets from my local boots chemist, and I am planning on eating more fish like salmon . :ThumbUp6:  :ThumbUp6:

When I moved here a few years back, I shifted to an almost total Thai food diet. Most of it was either from the then TGF, or street carts. It did wonders for my weight with no change in the quantity of what I was eating. The quality of what I was eating vastly improved over my lazy bachelor US diet.

Last year I had a no warning heart attack and was dead for several minutes. Total cholesterol was under 200, and had been for years.

So maybe if I'd stayed on my high processed food diet it would have happened sooner, maybe not. I do know I feel better now not eating all that crap I used to eat.

My advice is make the healthy choices you're willing to stick with. None of us know when we're going to check out, but it makes sense to delay it so long as the delay is not making you feel miserable.

The John Hopkins have recently released a paper stating that they feel the presumed link between Cholesterol and Heart problems was never proven and that their own detailed research does not support it. Further it is felt that the huge amount of Statins prescribed may well have done more harm than good, except for the pharmaceutical companies.

My own CL stands at over 1,600 yes that is correct   It appears my body makes its own, at the request of the Mrs I recently went and had a 3D cat scan done in Bangkok. It was fun walking along my veins and arteries and through my heart, even more so when the consultant declared them free of plaque and fat build up.

He then expressed concerns over the high level of my cholesterol and suggested he prescribe Statins, I merely pointed at the computer where the inner tubes of my heart was still on display and asked, why? In fairness he shrugged and said because it is the present medical advice which was not supported by my scan. Now I already take Garlic, Fish oil and Niacin and have done for several years. I will admit that in that time my levels have dropped by 200  :Evil_Grin2: Therefore i would suggest that if you have only slightly elevated levels that you leave those nasty Statins alone. Some mild exercise along with some fish oil, garlic should see you right  :Clap1:

I must admit it is a miserable transaction from pies, chips and  fried steak to healthy food but I'll keep on trying , my father had an heart attack some years ago so I know the distress it causes.

Will do that, in fact I quite like fish (and  I don't mean fish & chips) salmon is nice and mackerel,  and as I have said I take  cod liver oil tablets and I think I will start having garlic pills as well. :GoldenSmile1:  :GoldenSmile1:  :GoldenSmile1:

There is Pattaya Clinic Lab on Naklua Roard opposite Soi 10 who does blood analysis at a reasonable price. i believe these Doctors Clinics send their blood to him for testing.

He can send you an email with the results. Here is part of an email he sent me in 2009. I used to go to Pattaya Memorial Hospital every 2 years or so but their prices went way up

I have been meaning to get more tests done but have been lazy. I thought I would go to the new Hospital in Soi Baukouw to see what they charge,

I have been taking half of a 20mg Simvistatin every day for the past 10 years or so.

Hello rainsberger, sorry to hear about your health  problems great to know you have not let it put you off pattaya, I too like my sunday roasts and full English. I will however try to lose bit of the belly flab so my  pants  fit, and I don't get out of breath when my arse is going up and down like a fiddlers elbow.  hope you enjoy your next trip.  cheers weng weng

Saturated fat, and smoking are the main causes of high cholesterol for most people. So less fried food, less fatty meats (beef/pork), less dairy. Eating a diet mainly consisting of vegetables, with lean protein (fish/chicken), fruits, and healthy nuts such as almonds, pistachios, walnuts should help.

As for Thailand, I dont think you should really have too many issues if you actually attempt to stick to a cholesterol healthy diet. Theres tons of grilled chicken/seafood options available everywhere, along with fresh fruit and veg.

If you need to find out what the best foods are for reducing cholesterol (walnuts is one) and also other problems, such as lowering risk of colon cancer (chick peas, papaya)  I suggest you visit this site below. The site also lists the vitamin/mineral content of the top healthy foods, so you can pinpoint what foods to increase depending on your deficiencies.. Many of these foods are readily available in Thai street markets for relatively little cost

I may well look into that when there, actually talking about the hospital I remember on my first visit in 2010 on the second week I suffered badly with  kidney stone had to have  full body scan, then pain killers, it cost me a small fortune but got it back with the travel insurance when I got home. Theres nothing worse than a kidney stone, especially when you have to get t the hospital by taxi bike. :Cry3:
