Entering Thailand on a British Passport, or Thai Passport

A friends wifes, Thai passport as expired, anyone know if she enters Thailand on her UK passport, can she only stay the 30 days or when she renews her Thai passport in Thailand, can they stamp the new passport, to let her stay longer as a Thai National

I'm sure if she explained it to Thai immigration on arrival they would advise her accordingly.  Thais look after Thais.  She is still a Thai National so can reside there permanently right?

She can stay as long as she wants ... she's Thai. No need, or is it possible, to get her new Thai passport stamped.

Enter on UK, leave on Thai - immigration would be none the wiser. Immigration can get a tadge shitty in some countries if you use different passports for entering and leaving but no big deal (I got hassled once on the way out of the UK for using an Aussie passport, just happened to be the first passport that came to hand, told him to pull his neck in and grabbed my UK out of the bag and he still lectured me for about 5 minutes!).

That sounds messy and the potential for disaster is certainly lurking. Why doesn't she renew he passport in the UK?

Wrong. When next used, the Immigration computer would flag up an overstay on the UK passport - denial of entry or an expensive discussion would follow. It could be equally expensive presenting a Thai ID card to Immigration and demanding the right, as a Thai national, to enter the country without a passport.

Scumbag's question - why doesn't she renew the passport in the UK? - is especially relevant at present. The main passport-issuing office at Chaeng Wattana in Bangkok has been closed for weeks because of Suthepista actions and the satellite offices in Bangkok and up-country only re-opened this month and have a HUGE backlog to clear.

If you say so mate.

When she has a new passport why would she use a Brit one to enter Thailand again?

Why indeed?

Thai passport in/out of LOS, British passport in/out of UK.

Travel with both so that they can be produced to show (a) boarding gate staff of LOS to UK flights, concerned not to allow boarding for Thais with no UK visa (b) Thai Immigration, perplexed that a passenger arriving from the UK has no UK visa in her passport.

If she going she will have to put APN in for Flight so if NO Thai Passport current she will use UK and enter Thailand and leave with that surely

Only other way around is single Flight from UK out and Thai ( if she replaces OFD Passport ) and single back

Seems simple to me !!!

They are still issuing passports with very little delay. I was assuming that any application for a new passport (relating to the OPs question) would be lodged in the UK so there should not be any issues.

BTW to add to my first post I have no idea why anyone would fuck around by not get a new passport before departing. For some reason I can not help but think that someone will be saying 'if only I had...' at some point in time...:D

As already pointed out this is wrong. She needs to enter on her expired Thai passport. She could enter on the UK passport but then she also needs to use it to make her next exit or she will be overstay as a UK citizen.

Entering on an expired Thai passport is not a problem.

Should enter Thailand on her expired Thai passports. (no issues as she is Thai)

May have to show British passport to exit UK. If she enters Thailand on her UK passport

she will only get 30 days.

A person should always enter their country with that countries passport. If you enter using another countries passport you are defacto making an official statement that you are a citizen of that country and NOT the country you are entering. Expired or not a passport is always proof of citizenship and will allow entry into that country. Your friend can get a Travel Document from the Embassy or Consulate in the UK, this letter will allow travel to Thailand only and only for a certain date. Or just leave the UK on the UK passport and present the Thai passport to immigration in Thailand and the UK passport if asked for it.

Am I the only one who sees that the best approach is to get a new passport in the UK before departing? I don't know why people want to make things complicated.

Told her to exit uk on her British passport and ask Thai Immigration when she gets there lol, On the Thai Embassy Website, London, says it could take up to 8 weeks to get new passport, I think she wants to go before then

If she is getting a return Ticket she will still need to exit on the British Passport as API would not match and be denied Boarding

No you are not the only one.  Seems so simple to me, just renew and all will be well.
