SHOCKING internet in Pattaya - how can you work online?

I'm having a hell of a time trying to work online here.. How can any of you guys work online?

The condo I’m staying at in Jomtien has both 3BB and True connected and both networks are constantly dropping out. One minute the speed is good and the next I can't even get a page to load.

I do a speed test to HKG and it comes back at 12Mbps, but then a moment later I can't get a simple page to load. The upload speed result is always crap.

I don't think the issue is with the wifi routers because I don't have any trouble connecting and they work great.. sometimes. Also, I was staying at a hotel on Soi Diana before I moved here at the internet there had the same issues.

I've made inquiries about getting my own line because I believe the network is overloaded here with too many users, but both 3BB and True want me to pay 12 months in advance and won't let me transfer the connection to a new address if I move!

I believe Fiber is the way to go. I talked to TOT about a 1299 baht / month connection and the girl told me they can only install it at the ground level of a condo because the fiber cable can't be bent to point upward. RIDICULOUS!! Just to be sure I talked to an internet engineer friend of mine and he said yes, it can't be bent at 90 degrees, but there's no need to do that - you just put a gentle curve in it. Anyway it comes off a roll, so it has to be curved.

3G is not an option either with their download caps..

Any suggestions?

If I were in this situation I would get two connections (adsl + secondary adsl/wifi/3g), rent a virtual server in e.g. Singapore and set up something called "VPN bonding".

Basically the two connections are used together, if one fails the low-level VPN packets get through via the other one. Everything is tied together at the remote side.

The downside besides the extra cost is the need to be comfortable with linux and networking. The upside would be brilliant reliability.

Here's a page explaining this in more detail: http://simonmott.co.uk/vpn-bonding

Wow you're lucky to be located next to one of those. What do they look like? Something just bolted onto a power pole?

I'll be moving to central Pattaya as soon as I can find a condo. Hopefully I'll be in range of one.

The problem is the shared WiFi connection. Too many people streaming video, downloading, etc. and your shared connection is bound to suffer.

I have both True (fiber) and 3BB (adsl). It's very rare I have problems with either connection, and never both at the same time. If you do opt for your own connection I would recommend the premium packages that have, at a minimum, upload speeds of 1Mbps. Lower than that and I've found the international connection speeds suffer.

As for fiber can only be installed on the ground floor, BS to that. The fiber only goes to a junction box, from there it is coax to the home/condo.

And regarding the 12 month pre-paid requirement. If you have a TGF or Thai friend willing to sign the contract, you can get a paid by the month, one year contract.

They're just bolted to power poles around town . The service guy from 3BB

pointed it out to me when he was at my house to check the 3BB internet , lol .

Yes I think you're right.. the guy in unit 1 told me he is downloading torrents with the True connection - he said it works great. Problem is no bandwidth left for the rest of us.

Great idea.. but how do I explain to my Filipina GF that I'm looking up one of my old barfines? LOL

this test is to bangkok and I'm paying for 12mbps

they have been trying to fix the problem for months

tomorrow they are installing a new cable to my condo

the next test was to hong kong

anything leaving thailand tends to drop off the scale

it seams the anything outside thailand slows up

I think the trick is to stay in a house and then you have control over your internet.  Mine was crap to start with, but you can get someone to rewire outside your house without asking permission from committee members lol

Interesting that some people are saying they have great internet and others is total shit..

Today my two connections are good, then other days I can't get a page to load. It's frustrating

Note the slower upload and ping on the True connection - that is the one that drops out more frequently

I had adequate internet in the three different condos I stayed in at VT6 for 17-18 days last month, enough so skype worked fine...

dunno from speed testing, not a technically savvy guy, just a salesman...

I use VPN for connections back to the US. Never a problem for me. Curious what ISP/plan you're using that's giving you poor performance?

Another topic I had not thought about. If I stay for 3 months or more this is something that I will certainly require for my business. I can work from anywhere but need a reliable internet service. Thanks for the heads up. Ed.

I have tried a few paid ones, right now I am using IPVanish, one thing is not all  UK VPN's are good for what I do. I usually test them on the UK lottery site, it wil tell you if they think you are outside the UK, many paid ones fail on this

I would be happy to try your recommendation

My question was about which Internet Service Provider (ISP) you're using and the plan you're on. The VPN connection problems may be due to the ISP service you're using, or almost for sure if you're using a shared WiFi connection.

How is your packet loss? http://www.megapath.com/speedtestplus/

When I had ADSL my internet would work great and drop off and work great and drop just like you're describing. I figure the DSL line isn't shielded and that was causing the problem. Using different routers didn't fix it and the techs didn't fix it. After I made the switch to True cable modem service I never have problems. My net get slow at times on the weekend or holidays sometimes. I usually run a VPN service connecting through LA. Also when I forget to pay my bill they never e-mail me or give me a warning page they just disconnect my service so you should pay your bill. They told me at the shop near Tukcom when I signed up that I needed to prepay 1 year in advance so I said OK but please bill me, I don't want to pay now. Then they just sent me a bill every month.

I pay 1300 baht for 20mb/2mb cable modem package. Speedtests to Bangkok usually show 15-40mbps. Speedtests to USA usually show 8-16mbps.

there are too many variables with adsl broadband I used 3bb in october in north pattaya soi 1 connection was great and very stable yet many bm;s have drop outs !!!! ! the proximity to the exchange must be a factor , in Edinburgh where I live we stay 2 miles away from nearest adsl exchange so can only get a  maximum of 3 meg but with a  virginmedia fiber optic  line its  100 meg !  if you stay close to exchange you get 20 meg plus most isp's have traffic management written into contracts so at peak times it will slow to a snail pace same same here as in los
