Cambodian Monks Arrested In Chonburi Graveyard

Chonburi police have arrested a gang of Cambodian monks that would receive food and money from local people in a Chonburi graveyard. They would get around 3,000-4,000 BHT per day.

CHONBURI – January 27, 2014 [PDN]; Pol. Capt. Sivakorn Janthamenchai (police on duty of Chonburi provincial police station) was notified from Chonburi Provincial Office of Buddhism to ask for the support of police forces to arrest a group of Cambodian monks that had settled on the hill in Meng Hui graveyard, Tambon Ban Suan, Amphur Mueang, Chonburi province.

The police arrested 33 Cambodian monks who were then taken to Nok temple, Amphur Mueang, Chonburi province, in order to inspect their passports and if the officers found that the passports of any monks had expired will be sent to the Immigration Bureau to be deported and prohibited from entering Thailand again.
Monk Udomtharmmaros (the monk dean of Amphur Mueang Chonburi and the abbot of Nok temple) revealed that these monks are arrested every year.

Upon questioning the officers of Chonburi Provincial Office of Buddhism they gave information to the police that these Cambodian monks always come to Thailand every year and every time they would settle down as a group in an unnoticeable area where they would receive around 3,000-4,000 THB per day which they then transferred back to their country via the bank.

This raises an interesting point.

Do monks actually get paid a "daily rate"?

If so, where and for what reason.

 

What I have seen and can vouch for is that Monks attending a home of a deceased person receive individual payments three times a day

up until the day of Cremation.

 

The amounts paid varies depending on the "Seniority" of the Monks, and the mounts paid increase daily.

 

In the event of a High Profile Monk Attending, he is paid a Very Substantial amount for attending.

 

I am posting this as I find this Fascinating!!! But not necessarily so different to other religions or faiths.

 

Just as a word of caution should an unsuspecting Farang find that his Teerak needs money to help "Funeral Costs"

(Payments to the monks as well as food, gifts etc, is only one part of expenditure in the event of someone's departure from the land of the living).
