Mozzies

Recommended Posts

Being a tropical climate, I assume the LOS has its share of mozzies (mosquitos)?

Is packing aerogard advisable? I can be in a group of 20 and be the only bastard bitten....repeatedly

I know in my neck of the woods mozzies can spread diseases like Ross River Fever etc

If you are around water there are loads of them! I get bitten a lot, on average about 25 times a day and that happens even when I use repelents!

In the old days people drank shit loads of Gin and Tonic, the tonic water contains Deet, a natural mozzie repellant.

Are you sure about that mate?

Quinine is the main flavouring of tonic water. There is no Deet in any amount in Tonic water.

DEET is fucking toxic as hell and I think you may have your wires crossed there!

See- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DEET

Quinine is used in the treatment of malaria and I guess this is where you may have misunderstood

make sure you have that G&T with plenty of lemon.

I hear mosquitoes hate Vitamin C.

An I think I heard something about bananas for the potassium.

I don't know of the efficiency of these home remedies but I'd prefer some homegrown solutions to a bunch of chemicals on my skin.

I poison myself enough with booze and nicotine.

While on the topic,I can honestly say eating a lot of bannanas (8 to 10 per day) I have only been bitten twice in the last 3 trips to Thailand,Cambodia and Fiji.(Yes I'm a fucking monkey! I just love Bannanas :D )

I might add I never ever use any Deet or Dimp or any other repelants on my travels-It's got me fucked-my mates sit there getting eaten alive and I watch them land and take off again without biting

Got to be those bananas I think :Chokdee3:

Mind ingesting or applying anything that may leave an odor. Thai birds have sensitive noses. I never get bitten by other than bed bugs, the insect variety. Damn those cheap ST hotels off Walking Street.

Marmite works well, they hate the smell of your perspiration. Word of warning keep up with personal hygene as marmite is Yeast based and so the obvious complications. I eat it every morning and evening and shower thee or four times a day.

My best tip for not getting bitten is wear LONG TROUSERS at night. Simple.

I do the same and have no problems. Mozzies tend to hang around under the tables in outside bars and if you wear short trousers you are going to get bit.

B vitamans keep them off also. If you do get bit. The pharmices sell stuff in a green and white tin. Can't read Thai

so I can't tell you what its called. A girl showed me this stuff. takes the itch out quick. Next day, bites gone. Less

than 100bht. Pharmices will know. Say for mozzies.

Mozzies oh no! I am like a Mozzie magnet - I went to Venice in March, there were like a hand full on the whole island - but my legs looked like a 13 year old boys acne covered face!

What's the best cream/lotion to keep them off while not ruining your chances of scoring?

Medical Doc here:

None of the above therapies have been proven. The quinine in tonic water doesn't help you from getting bitten by mosquitos, it potentially helps you if you get Malaria from the mosquitos. Malaria and other mosquito bourne diseases are a big deal in parts of Thailand and you should see a travel doc or at least visit the CDC web site for Thailand if you are traveling outside the big cities as you are at risk in some places.

DEET is very safe and you will get maximum benefit from about 30%. Don't eat it or get it in your eyes, but on the skin it's fine. You should pretreat your clothes with permethrin (permethrin you keep off your skin) and that helps a lot. Use mosquito nets as much as you can. Finally if you are in a Malaria zone, you should consider seeing a doctor about Malaria prophylaxis. Not getting bitten in the first place is the best way to avoid Malaria, Dengue, Yellow fever, and a whole host of other nasties.
