Washington - Climate scientists are investigating why Antarctic sea ice reached its largest extent on record in 2013 even though the Earth's temperature was among the 10 hottest years since 1880.

Not that many here will give a fuck but my understanding is that the freshwater glaciers are melting more quickly than thought, e.g the Pine Glacier. This fresh water is running off into the ocean, the very cold salted ocean water (salted water freezes at a much lower temp than fresh water) is freezing an upper layer of this freshwater and turning it into sea ice. So the greater extent of sea ice (not greater volume) is another indicator of anthropomorphic climate change and an increased global temperature.<br /><br />That said the Antarctic is the least understood of the Poles.
