Customs seized rhino horn worth 21 million THB

Customs officials at Suvarnabhumi Airport have seized a rhino horn that was being smuggling from Kenya via Thailand to its final destination of Hanoi in Vietnam. It weighed 21.80 kg and was worth about 21 million baht.

SUWANNAPHUM – January 20,2014 [PDN]: Mr.Paisal Chuenjit, Deputy Director General of the Department of Customs, and wild life customs officers, at Suvarnabhumi Airport announced thediscovery of nine pieces of smugged rhinos’ horns, weighing 21.80 kg and worth over 21 million baht.

Then the officers checked the airline and realized that the bag had been left behind at the airport in Nairobi, Kenya, and the bag was in cargo transit to its destination and was passing through Thailand by Kenya Airways ,flight KQ886, and its final destination was Hanoi ,Vietnam, by Thai Airways. The officers opened the luggage and thoroughly checked it and found random sized rhinos’ horns a total weight of 21.80 kg that were wrapped in clear plastic and had garlic stuffed inside the cavity of rhino horn to hide the scent . Authorities then seized the evidence, and sent it to the detective officers of Suvarnabhubi airport police station to process because it was breaking the law of the Wildlife Preservation and Protection Act, 1992, according to the convention on International Trade . Which species of wildlife and plants that are endangered species (CITES). The police would prepare to coordinate to related offices to arrest the gang.

Same consignment of goods was intercepted by Customs this week in our country.The goods were moided in plaster. Smugling of CITES goods is a huge deal and ilegal business.
