Italian conductor Claudio Abbado dies aged 80: friend

ROME - Italian conductor Claudio Abbado, whose stellar career took him from La Scala opera house to the Berlin Philharmonic to the Vienna State Opera, died on Monday at the age of 80, a close collaborator told AFP.

Interesting that just yesterday I had borrowed a DVD, with Claudio Abbado and the Berliner Philharmoniker (as spelled on the DVD case), performing Beethoven's Symphony 1, 6, and 8. (No. 6 is my fav!!).
