An Australian tourist who was rushed to hospital with acute stomach ache was arrested after a doctor found 65 packages containing drugs worth more than one million baht in his stomach.

The provincial hospital alerted police late on Friday night when an X-ray of John Paul Jones, 51, revealed suspicious objects, shaped like a string of sausages, in his intestine.

The objects were later extracted and identified as 800 grammes of hashish.

Worapob Sutiwatanaruput, the doctor supervising the case, said Mr Jones experienced severe stomach pain after staying on the tourist island of Samui for five days and was taken to hospital.

''Before the operation, Mr Jones looked nervous and asked whether police would be notified. We found 62 black objects obstructing his small intestine. Three packs had burst,'' Dr Worapob said.

The hash was wrapped in condoms and each pack was about two inches long. The operation to extract the packages took two hours and Mr Jones remained in critical condition yesterday, the doctor said.

Police said the hash, regarded as a category 5 drug, was not produced in Thailand. The drug was likely to have been made in India or Pakistan and is popular among tourists who take part in the full moon parties on Koh Phangan, an island close to Samui.

It is sold at 1,500-2,000 baht a gramme.

Police said Mr Jones would be charged and detained for interrogation.

Provincial governor Vinai Buapradit suspected Mr Jones swallowed the drugs when he was overseas so he could pass through drug detectors and sniffer dogs at airports and at the pier on Samui where boats leave for Koh Phangan.

Pinyo Thongchai, the deputy chief of the Department of Special Investigation, said trans-national criminal groups were rampant on Koh Samui.

As well as the Bandidos motorcycle gang, which recently faced a crackdown by authorities, there were also international mafia gangs doing illegal businesses in drugs, land and property deals and extorting money from foreign businessmen.

In June last year police on Koh Samui arrested Frenchman Pittet Pasca Maorica, 53, who was also admitted to Samui International Hospital after suffering from stomach pain.

Doctors found one kilogramme of heroin in his stomach.

Never like to hear of anyone dying but what a dumb cunt.

I don't buy out the bar, I buy the nightspot.

What a stupid cunt. If you knew what you had in your stomach was highly illegal in LOS and liable to cause you all manner of shit, why would you go to the hospital? Surely you would try removing the drugs yourself?

WOW! What an idot. Drugs aren't worth the chance. Stay clean and stay straight.

800 grams of hash, distributed between 65 condoms averages out at 12.31 grams per condom. Three had burst, thus nearly 37 grams, or 1 whole ounce, 1 guarter ounce, and the best part of an eighth had become exposed to his digestive system. Whilst this is a hell of a lot of hash, it is not by itself certainly fatal... however, street hash is often not the cleanest of substances, and rupturing in his lower intestine may have caused perotonitus, It's also possible that there were complications or an infection caused by the surgery itself.

If the unfortunate man had failed to repackage the hash into new condems after it's initial importation, not only would the condoms have been weakened by their first trip through his ( Or maybe somebody elses ) digestive system, they would also have been contaminated with faeces. This would have made the containment failure far more likely, and subsequent infection well neigh certain.

Taking an average sale price of 1750 baht per gram, (Their figures, not mine), he would have made £21,538 GBP on his haul... assuming that he was a sole operator, and had incurred no obligations to any other criminals en route. By the time you subtract the expenses involved in travelling from Australia to India to obtain the hash in the first place, and thence to Thailand, and his daily expenses, his endevour would have netted well under £20,000 GBP. And that's assuming that he paid nothing whatever for the hash itself, an unlikely event....

That's a piss poor price for a life... I'm very sorry for his family and loved ones.

I'm not going to comment on the comparitive morality in becoming involved in smuggling and selling Hash... except to say that it's a damn stupid thing to do in Thailand, or anywhere else for that matter. But purely on a mathmatical level, it's a very poor equation. And all that so that 800 people could decide to get stoned at a full moon party...

That's not worth anyones life.

Hey man he died 6 days later.

So he did not make it the the Bangkok Hilton, probably a reasonable outcome as that place has one of the highest mortality rates of any prison in the world.

51 years old and doing that kind of thing in Thailand of all places, wonder how long the Guy was hooked on drugs for. The fact that Heroine has been mentioned sends a shiver down my spine, the second worse drug of them all, I put Yaba worse than the dirty H for long term impact it has on society both East and West.

They say that Terrorism is making a lot of the drugs these days, so just like the advert at the start of DVDs saying that burning DVDs supports terrorism, kids don't do drugs unless your smoking your marijuana, or sniffing your lines of coke or speed, popping an E or eating some refreshing Mushroom Soup. If your into drugs and it is not in the previous sentance take a long look in the mirror and if you can not get off the Yaba or the H or seek help please shoot yourself now and save the world.

Most stupid and meaningless way to die is highlighted in this article and in Thailand of all places, nothing else says Brain Dead!
