Fully-equipped gym for HIIT?

Featured Replies

Hi All,

I am now doing an HIIT program (High Intensity Interval Training), after previously being a more "conservative" endurance athlete in years past. I've never been overweight, but I find that I can put more muscle on (with weight training) doing a combo of HIIT and weights than the endurance training (+ weights). There have been many recent articles supporting this theory. (le.g. ooking at a sprinter's physique vs. a distance runner's)

My "problem" is that I cannot find ANY gym in Pattaya that can handle my "max" ...even the treadmills at Tony's on Soi Bukhaow "peter out" when they go faster over 14KM (display says "unable to reach desired limit"), so while the machines can do the 13KM (my jogging speed) for the "slow portion" --I need to be able to hit my "max" which is closer to 15+KM......and so far EVERY treadmill in Patts I have tried won't handle it!

I used to go to the gym in LK Metropole Hotel (small gym, but good treadmills, OK weights, and had A/C), but all of their treadmill machines are "out of order", being in a state of dis-repair for weeks now.....I was paying THB 100 a shot there, and was happy with that (when the treadmills were working)

So, I then went to Tony's "Thai" gym on south Soi Bukhaow and I was told "for Thai people only, or long term members", which apparently also applies to the Tony's on 3rd road (corner of South Pattaya road), not to mention that doing ANY HIIT in the middle of a MAJOR intersection in an "open air" gym (with all the lovely fumes and pollution from the traffic!) is not my idea of "healthy" training!

So, now I'm really in a bind...I need to find a properly working treadmill that will handle 14KM + intervals, AND have a decent free weight area. I'm not looking to get "big and bulky" but I do need a gym that has a proper "balance" of cardio AND weight training facilities--and I am willing to pay a fair price for it.

Thanks in advance!

Tony has a gym on Walking Street (they call it Tony's Powerstation). Located just north of Soi 16, it's actually behind Club Azziz. Walk into this open air nightclub, and at the rear is Tony's. They charge around 120 baht per visit. Plenty of machines, lots of free weights, and a 2nd floor with all sorts of cardio machines, and it's air-conditioned.

I'm not Thai, and I've never had a problem there......I've worked out there on numerous trips over the last 7 years.

I hope this helps.

Aone hotel has a gym don't know if it has what you want but worth a look

all the equipment looks ok

soi 2/3 beach road end

Tony's Gym, rather cheap.   There is a great place run by a hotel near the old dolphin circle.  It is 4,000 baht a month.  It has Tennis and a pools on the beach---beach chairs also, Dusit club access.  If you just want to work out, Tony's is our place.

The smell of a bunch of men at Tony's is enough to throw up!---That's why men are there--to meet other men.

Not my scene!

I always wondered why people like Tonys?   The place smells like butthole!    Just a bunch of men flexing.  I know it's cheap------It reaks!

Have you tried Fairtex on North Road?

From what I have been told they have pretty decent equipment.

Better to pay for a fantasy than lose to an illusion

trip to lagos

Tony's is not for everyone.

It is cheap.

It is dirty.

Lots of equipotential.---everything from North Korea.

Smells like Russian ass!

Who actually has a Tony's Gym membership and doesn't have athletes foot?   Is it viral?

Tony--clean up that gym!  Bleach maybe?  No Russians?  who knows--its a mess!

Tonys has a great set up.. Personaly I don't like hanging out with a bunch of meat heads on steroids.  Most are looking for gay men, and Tony's is a gay hang out.

Men love men---Looking at each other in sweaty glances.

Be cool if others experienced the awkward Tony Gay machine?--------

OP, can you get hold of any 5 pound ankle weights?

Sex is better than any workout.  I think Tony's is your avenue.       Why would anyone go to Pattay for a work out ethic is up to them?-----It smells like homo love ethic!   That's what all these clowns do--secret love amongst Tony Boy's!

Tony's is for men who love men!---Gay as can be! :Think1:

What branch of Tony's are you referring to? Perhaps you do not realize that he has many?

Be cool to learn about Fairtex.   It was very popular, what happened?

I remember the blokes walking back  from Tony's Gym, we had a laugh!  Bald men with there chests thumping------pure fools!

The South branch.  It's a great place if you like to work out!.....

It's really for hard core people.  Even with the pool, it's for younger hard core gay men!

That said.  Go for it, they have a pay by the day deal!-----for me, no thanks!

The Hilton has a great Gym.   If you are a member---135.00 US a month and have Chase Ink Card---it is free.    You get what you pay for!.........

All Chase card members should check this out---this place would make you work out!

The Girls alone made me blush!

Any cheap personal trainers in Pattaya.. With hiit experience would be even better

That's the one I use, not the most fancy but good enough for me, and hot enough to sweat buckets if you need to tighten up your abs.

There's some cardio machines upstairs but not sure how fast the treadmill goes.

I think the OP might look into using the elliptical type machines, those can give you a pretty intense interval workout.

Or maybe go to Pratumnak hill area I heard they have a road you can jog, maybe do some sprints up and down the hill.

How about crossfit type workouts? You don't need to sprint to do high intensity type training. A typical crossfit workout might be something like:

Ten rounds for time of:

12 Burpees

12 Pull-ups

Try a modified version of the kick boxing cardio regimen:

Burpees -running on the spot- push ups -jumping jacks.

I typically do my interval cardio days at a local high school track, but during the winter months I have to move it into my gym and work the treadmill due to it getting dark earlier. Treadmills at my gym get bit wonky around 10 mph and the noise causes a scene. My solution has been a weighted vest or just cranking the incline. You can jack up your intensity without increasing speed this way and some studies have shown that the incline treadmill saves your knees some beating.

Yes, you could do a lot of good stuff in your hotel room that doesn't require any equipment at all.

After one round of doing burpees, run in place, push ups, side straddle hop, I'd say most guys on here would be seriously sucking wind and ready to toss their cookies.

There's many versions of doing intense exercise like this these days, Tabata protocol, Crossfit, P90x, insanity, etc. etc. Good stuff, the key is intense bursts of exercise with little rest between exercises/times.

You guys that go to Tony's just off walking street, do you know if they have any eco-treadmills? I use those for my interval training and plan on going 2 from 3 days whilst I am there for my 2 weeks trip. Is this the best gym to go to whilst I am there for 2 weeks? I just alternate between weights and cardio and never exercise longer than 40 mins, I assume it will have all I need and more. I am staying in Soi 10 but have not seen any gyms up that way.

Do 50 jumping jacks, 50 burpees then 50 lunges and then get on the treadmill.

See how your "max" is feeling then....

Some good stuff to do in your hotel room, doesn't take hours of cardio or working out, lots of high intensity stuff in short period of time
