quit smoking. Just want to know a few issues regarding e cigarettes from those who are on it. Is it safe and do you get the same satisfaction of a real cigarette, which is the best brand of e cigarette and how much does it cost. Any info will be very useful.

After nearly 30 years of smoking a pack a day, I switched to an e-cig (Blu) back in July.  The Blu e-cig provided a certain level of satisfaction, but it was a pain in the ass - batteries died quickly and cartridges didn't last as long as advertised.

To the naysayers, IMO, nicotine vaporizers are an excellent alternative to cigarettes.  My taste buds have returned to normal and my sense of smell has improved. The water vapor you exhale doesn't linger or stink up a room.  It doesn't stick to your clothes or your skin. The ingredients of e-juice are propylene glycol, vegetable glycerine and nicotine.  Sure, more research needs to be done, but I figure instead of ingesting 4000+ chemicals from a single cigarette, I'm ingesting three.

 

Lastly, despite the apparent illegal status of them here in LOS, nobody has said boo to me.  However, I brought my own juice.  I just hope 4 bottles of level 24mg nicotine juice is enough for 3 weeks!

Saved a fortune, feel a lot healthier and don't have to stand outside freezing my balls off to get a hit!

 

I've had no problem using them anywhere in Thailand.

This is only my opinion, but technically, I don't think there's a difference between e-cigs and the vaporizer that I use, other than convenience.  When I think of an e-cig, I think of the units that look similar to a real cigarette, like the Blu brand:

 

 

E-cigs use disposable cartridges that come filled with a little e-juice.  In the US, a package of cartridges contains 5 cartridges and costs about US$15.  They claim one cartridge equals one pack of cigarettes, but I found that no matter the level of nicotine, I would use 2-3 cartridges per day, or 3 packages of 5 cartridges per week (US$45/week).  I also found the battery would only last about 4-5 hours, so I had to purchase a couple spare batteries for US$30.00 each.  The Blu also didn't produce much vapor, so the satisfaction level wasn't there.  In the end, the Blu e-cig wasn't very satisfying or cost effective for me.

 

For the nicotine vaporizer that I currently use, the unit has a refillable chamber for the e-juice.  A bottle of e-juice costs between US$10-15 and lasts about a week for me.  After a full charge, the battery lasts all day.  The vaporizer also produces a lot of vapor, thus provides the psychological satisfaction I'm seeking.

A normal cigarette will fit snugly in the end of the cartridge by itself  and will give you a massive nicotine hit top up if time is short  but take gentle draws on it though or the hit will blow your head off.

I have been using e-cigarettes on and off for years and managed to stop smoking for a couple of years completely. Unfortunately, I then spent a bit of time in Thailand where I couldn't resist the lure of cheap smokes and started again 

 

At the moment, I am off the real cigarettes and hopefully will be for good. 

 

Anyway, my experiences of the more commonly available ones are they are a bit disappointing in terms of battery life, battery power, atomizer life & performance. These points apply especially to the ones that resemble real cigarettes, even if they have tips that glow blue or green.

 

 

My advice to anyone thinking of getting one of these is don't.

 

Then you have the more expensive and more capable ones, such as the EGO series. These come in various battery capacities ranging from 650mAh to 1300mAh and the more expensive ones have variable voltage so you can choose how hot to run your atomizer. EGO batteries can accept a large variety of different atomizers as long as they have an EGO thread and these are usually either cartomisers or clearomisers. The new EGO batteries have a safety on/off system to stop them accidentally going off in your pocket which is handy.

 

 

To be honest, these aren't too bad and seem to be the ones that most people end up with. They are cheap, perform relatively well and have helped literally millions of people get off the weed - well sort of.

 

If you fancy going up to the next level, you could consider an electronic mod which accept a separate, powerful battery which will last a lot longer and, all in all, is a better engineered product. 

 

 

This one is know as a Vamo V5 and will accept 2 different sized batteries either 35mm or 65mm long. Their capacities range from about 800mAh to roughly 5000mAh. This will allow you to set whatever voltage or wattage you want and the LED screen shows how much power you have left, the resistance of the atomizer coil etc. Most of these will allow any type of commonly available atomizer to fit onto it as long as it has an EGO or a 510 thread - which just about everything has.

 

Running a device like this will give you sort of all day vaping capability if you have a decent lithium 18650 battery in it.

 

Its biggest limitation is that electronics provided in general and the on/off switch in particular can only draw a limited amount of amps from the battery. In most cases, they will check the resistance of the atomizer and only fire it if it is 1.5 ohms or more. The maximum voltage they will generate is 5v DC, so a quick check of ohms law tells us that the maximum power to the atomizer is just over 3 amps. Again, for the vast majority of people this will easily be enough.

 

So, this brings me onto the last of the commonly available devices - the mechanical mod.

 

This is a device that contains no electronics - nothing at all. It is simply a battery holder with a threaded connection for the atomizer and a mechanical on/off switch. Because there are no electronics and because the switch is mechanical there is really no limit on how much power the atomizer can draw from the battery - except for a big safety concern which I will come to in a little bit.

 

A typcial mechanical mod and the one that I use is a K100 telescopic mod and here it is ...

 

 

This particular mod will accept 3 different sized batteries known as 18350, 18500 and 18650 so you can configure it as being small, medium or large. The photo above is the device fitted with the smallest battery.

 

The whole point of the mechanical mods is that they remove all power limitations, which enables you to set up your atomizer as you see fit. Most people would use rebuildable atomizers on these devices and they would build the coils themselves from commercial heating wire such as kanthal.

 

The two types of rebuildable atomizers are dripping and tank, known as RDAs and RTAs. A tank contains a few mls of e-liquid whilst a dripping atomizer contains very little and the user has to top it up every 5 or 10 minutes from a little bottle. These atomizers are usually built from stainless steel and are quite substantial in terms of weight and size. There are many, many different types available, the photo below is of a trident RDA, which is my current favourite.

 

 

And here is a trident fully assembled.

 

 

A fully charged 18650 battery will actually output 4.2 volts even though it rated at 3.7 volts and here we get into the safety aspect of these devices. If you constructed a single, dual or quad coil with a resistance of, say, 0.4 ohms it's going to do 3 things. It's going to generate an enormous amount of vapour, it's going to get very hot and it's going to use a lot of power - 4.2 / 0.4 = 10.5 - so, it's going to draw 10.5 amps from the battery - about 3 times more power than from an electronic device.

 

This is where you have to be careful, in fact very careful. The lithium batteries are constructed to have a maximum safe continuous drain and on the cheap ones this isn't much. The more expensive ones can be rated at up to 30 amps and are quite safe, but if you draw too much power from a cheap one then it can go into meltdown mode whereby it kind of short circuits internally and sort of explodes a few inches away from your face, which you want to avoid if possible.

 

In fact, all mechanical mods have air holes top and bottom to avoid a failing battery turning your mod into a pipe bomb!

 

The mech mods suit me 'cos I like tinkering with things until they break and I like competing with sheesha pipes for vapour production. As I said, the EGO series are pretty good and will suit the vast majority of people, just don't buy one of the things that tries to look like a cigarette.

 

Anyway, I'm no expert and these are just my thoughts and experiences with the e-cigs and I hope someone finds it useful.

I paid a naturopath doctor 400 bucks to run me through a two week aversion therapy program, ending with a session where I was taken to near death by smoking a bunch of cigarettes without taking any breaths in between drags...

Thai customs is somewhat of a joke - just don't declare anything and walk out like you haven't a care in the world.  I didn't have any troubles bringing in my mod in Dec/Jan and I used it everywhere and had zero trouble.  A lot of the girls were fascinated by the thing.  It's best to bring your own e-liquid, I couldn't find a vendor in Pattaya and I wouldn't trust the liquid if I had.
