Is Mold dangerous?

I am currently working on a US airbase in the middle east.. I have been here for over a year and have developed a lung disorder. The docs here gave me a Advair roto-haler and i use that twice a day, i can breathe normally when using that. If i forget to take it i get chest pains and cant breathe well, esp at night.

I believe this came from being exposed to so much mold on base,, its in the showers, in the hangar where i work its covered the walls about 12-15 ft high... and it had completely colonized my AC unit in my room. I had the AC unit changed but cant do anything about the other places.

My biggest concern is long term health risks,, are there any? I havent had much luck in finding any info on the net,, most sites are "blue coated" Its a miracle that i have access to this site...

Well... I've got a master degree in biochemistry and my final papers were about mycology. You say that you've got some problem with your lungs. Sounds like an allergic reaction to me. Maybe you are developing some kind of asthma. Do you also have irritations on your eyes or skin?

Make sure that you don't drink (or touch) alcohol by any means! Some mycotoxins can bring your heart and liver down. So don't give them any chance to spread in your system.

If possible get out there as soon as you can. In the meantime try to imrove your immune system and don't stress your body with beer (or other drugs) or junk food. If you get out there make sure to see a doctor for a check up.

Some of it is deadly. One thing I always get is a sore throat from sleeping with the air con on all night.

What you are describing doesn't sound good. I would take pictures or movies of the mold, document everything and if you can do it nicely, report it to the powers that be (even if it is a complaint/suggestion, do it). That way, if you have any problems in a year or so you will have some evidence. Definitly, see a doctor when you get off base and state side, a private doctor, not military to get a second opinion! Could be an allergy or the doc could be giving you the party line bullshit. Up to you to find out, good luck!

We had a brand new wing of the Hilton in Waikiki close down for a long time, because mold was discovered in it and could cause health problems for workers and guests. They had to clean up the mold in the entire wing and fix it so the mold problem won't happen again. Think mold isn't a serious problem, thini again!

long term exposure to mold can be very bad for your health from what I have read. Even moisture that forms on the AC's in Pattaya hotels for example will be the start of mold in the AC and spread to the room. That is on be reason people get sore throats and URI's in Pattaya. Someone suggested bringing a disinfectent, like Lysol, that kills all the bad stuff and go over the AC and room. Seems to me, I get less problems with throat and URI type problems since doing this.

Also, I agree, the temperature change and sweating from outside to an air conditioned room will cause problems. The one thing I try to avoid though, are rooms that have AC's that blow directly on the bed (try to point them away). This kind of setup is usually a sure way to get a cold during your stay!

After all I have written, I should chnage myuser name from mailman to moldman! But, I haven't noticed any mold on Thai pussy!

  • 2 weeks later...

i bet it is the black mold at the top of the showers in the corners. it causes or can cause all sorts of rep. problems. if they are not treating you properly then keep good records and take pics of it everywhere u see it. that way if it stays with you after your contract is up they still have to cover you.

Be careful mate.

I'd guess the mold isn't something really dangerous or they would clean it from the airbase.

But still what you've described doesn't sound good. While your young and healthy you can shrug this stuff of but it maybe doing longterm damage to your health.
