A big birthday celebration was held at the residence of Pattaya’s Mayor, Khun Ittipol Khunplome and many hundreds of invited guests joined in his birthday festivities in what were a very well organized function.

PATTAYA – December 15,2013 [PDN]; a huge crowd of ‘well-wishers’ attended a birthday celebration at the residence of Pattaya’s Mayor, Khun Ittipol Khunplome and presented him with hundreds of gifts to mark the commemoration of his birthday. This event was extremely well organized and started early with traditional blessings from local Buddhist monks, which was followed by an extended period of ‘gift giving’ by members of the community. A very large group of the ‘Press’ and local TV stations attended and were kept very busy, following the continuing events, with large photographs being available for free to all of the gift-givers. Food and drinks were freely available under a large pavilion, throughout this Sunday morning event, so it was a very relaxed occasion, in spite of all the formalities.

Our Mayor’s father, Somchai Khunpluem, was born on 30th September 1937 in Chonburi, and became a Thai politician, businessman and is also known under his nickname “Kamnan Poh”. He was highly influential in his home province of Chonburi and the whole Eastern region and has therefore been dubbed “Godfather of Chonburi” or “Godfather of the East” by Thai media and Somchai was long-term mayor of Saen Suk. Khun Ittipol’s father Somchai, who is the father of Khun Ittipol, was born as the son of a village headman, was the second of eight children and dropped out of school after grade-4and started working as a teenager. He began as a bus-boy before starting his own bus service and after some time as a monk and as a soldier, he became the partner of a French businessman active in the fishing industry. In 1963 he married Khun Ittipol’s mother “Satil Sancharoen,” who was the daughter of a fish trader. Later Somchai Khunpluem expanded to the building sector, establishing his company “Bang Saen Maha Nakhon.” In 1968, he became headman (“Kamnan”) of Saen Suk sub-district. He opened a liquor distributing business, and later broadened his economic empire to several other industries, with the most profitable being his activities in the construction and real estate sectors. The national government started to develop the ‘Eastern Seaboard’ as an industrial region in the 1980s, so Somchai Khunpluem became a key intermediary between the central government, multinational and local investors. This spurred the rise of his economic and political influence, which he in turn used to provide a further boost of the urban and industrial development of his home province. In 1989, Saen Suk (which includes the popular beach resort of Bang Saen) received the status of a municipality so Somchai, as the only candidate, became its first mayor. After the Thai Nation Party, (which Somchai supported), won the national election in 1995, its leader Banharn Silpa-archa became Prime Minister of Thailand, so Somchai was often contracted with government procurements. The combined assets of the Khunpluem and Sancharoen families were estimated on 4-billion baht in 2004.

Khun Ittipol Khunplome is the brother of Sontaya Kunplome, leader of the Phalang Chon Party, president of Pattaya United Football Club, the Minister ofCulture under Yingluck Shinawatra and formerly theTourism Minister under Thaksin Shinawatra. His other brotherWittaya Khunpluemis the President of Chonburi Football Club, Chairman of the Provincial Administrative Council of Chonburi and Member of Parliament representing Chonburi. As Somchai Khunpluem’s youngest son KhunIttipol Khunplome, is highly respected, becoming the Mayor of Pattaya City with a ‘landslide victory’ in his first election. With a law degree from both USA and Thailand, Khun Ittipol is well suited to being the Mayor of our rapidly growing Pattaya City and his friendly, energetic and forward thinking manner has won him the respect of everyone. He has recently won an election as the ‘Mayor of Pattaya City’ for another term and we wish him every success for the future.
