Local People Protested Against Impact Of Shipyard

Local people and students protested against a shipyard after suffering smell, noise, dust and pollution for more than 1 year.

PATTAYA – December 3,2013 [PDN]; at 2.00 p.m. a journalist reported that the local people of Thepprasit community together with a group of students of Aksorn Thepprasit school and the university students from Aksorn Pattaya Technology College totalling more than 100 people mustered in front of NPSK Marine Co., Ltd. which is a company for hiring, building and repairing boats that is located in Soi Sukhumvit-Pattaya 50, Sukhumvit road, south Pattaya, Moo 10 Tambon Nong Prue, Amphur Banglamung, Chonburi province in order to protest against the shipyard owner after the students and local people have suffered smelll, noise and dust from the shipyard.

Later, the members of Pattaya city and the involved officers went to inspect the shipyard but they found that the entrepreneur of this company had moved out some boats and some equipments and there was only engines that needed repairing and some workers. Mr. Piyaphong Rattanakornkullaphat, aged 31, address 161/3 Moo 10 Tambon Nong Prue, Amphur Banglamung, Chonburi province who is one of the local people that live near the shipyard revealed that he and the local people including students and university students that live near the shipyard have to endure the smell of engine oil and the spray painting including the noise and dust pollution from iron cutting every day for more than 1 year so they joined together to request the entrepreneur to improve their working conditions.

After that the representatives of the local people and the members of Pattaya city had talked with the representative of the company and they concluded that the noise and dust pollution from iron cutting will be stopped and has been moved to a factory in Tambon Huay Yai and for smell from the spray painting and engine oil will be also stopped today but if the company needs to operate, they will move to do at the opposite side of the shipyard and will try to prevent for the smell disturbing the local people. However, May next year, the company will move the shipyard to Phuket and will use the former place for storage only so it will not cause any problems to the community anymore. So after the people were satisfied with the answer from the company and went on their way
