My 30 days allowance will soon run out - I'm planning to leave 5 days after this happens.

I'm going up to Udon Thani in the next few days - can I simply do a short trip to Laos, and get myself a new stamp, or does it have to be in an international airport?

Go to Soi 5 immigration in Jomtien, they will extend it for you

1,900 baht

At a small cost Copies of passport and forms filled in for you in shop outside if you are not sure what to do

If you leave the country any method and come back you get a new waiver. If it is convenient for you to go to Laos you will get a new 30 day stamp. It used to be 15 at land borders. It is now 30 at any port of entry.

If that is not convenient then you can get a week at Jomtien with paperwork and a fee. And proof you are leaving in the week they grant. So 5 days will work fine.

Up to you which is easier.

Thanks - that's what I expected, just needed some kind of confirmation.

I was not sure wether or not passport is needed to go from Thailand to Laos, or they have some kind of agreement.

There is no passport free agreement.

There might be for Thais, not for farangs. I doubt even for Thais.

Usually what you will see is no visa at all even if they call for visas as a rule with some of these border to border countries.

4 countries in Central America have an alliance like you are thinking of, with only their voter ID enough to cross between the four and even tourists get to pay one tourist card and travel the four.

Other than that and Canada/US and the EU passports are pretty much the norm.

has the 30 day renewal for visa exemption (or whatever it's called) been turned on again for land crossings?

(like a std visa run of old)

last I heard it was only 15 days by land, 30 days otherwise.

curious

I asked the girlfriend about it, and apparently Thais can fill out some form to cross the Laos border without passport, but have to be back in Thailand before 6 PM.

By the way, in Scandinavia we can also cross the borders without passport.

Should it be a problem to go in the weekend?

I read in the paper a couple weeks back that they where considering changing it back to 30 but it was still in the discussion stage .. I think it's still 15 for land crossing

There'a thread (or two).

It's back to 30days, but not for all nationalities......and not for Aussies.   :LOL2:

If a Thai national has their I.D. card with them ( as they always should have ) they can fill in forms and stay in Laos for two days.

just for the border crossing and back again it is no problem at weekends.
