Thai language - different pronunciation of letters

Let's look at these two words:

โจ - [joon] (bandit, robber)

ดาา - [daaraa] (movie star, celebrity)

You know where I'm heading. Letter [roo rua] is once pronounced as a "r" (I agree with this) and once as a "n" (I don't agree with this). And I saw changing pronunciation even of other letters (consonants!). Why?

Some Thai consonants change their sound when they are in final position of a syllable. R is one of them, but as you have noted, there are more.

Check this page, especially the part with the 6 final consonant sound:

Thai words(syllables) can only end with following consonant sounds:

the hard ones K, P & T or

the soft ones M, N & NG

Hence some of the consonants with a different initial sound will end with these!

For example:

J,CH,S,DT,D is pronounced as a T at the end of a word

B as a P

Y,L,R as a N

Plahgat

ควายแก่แต่ชอบกินหญ้าอ่อน

Not to be a bugger, but how can you say that you 'don't agree with it'?  That is that part that confuses me in your last couple of threads.  Kudos for sticking with the learning.

Yeah, I think this might be why he's having so much trouble. Sometimes you just have to believe "that's the way it is", unless you want to open up a who new can of worms and delve into the Sanskrit, Pali and Khmer background of Thai.

up to you

I'm not native english speaker, maybe I didn't express myself clearly. I meant "I don't agree" --->>> "my knowledge didn't meet with this fact, why is that?".

Thanks to others for explaining, now I get it.

Obviously anyone reading this topic is interested in learning the Thai language. Why don't you try out my new website? I think it is the best language learning system in the world and it is free. It went live yesterday so it still has a lot of bits and pieces to put together but I think anyone who wants to learn Thai the easy way is welcome to try it out. You can also suggest corrections and donate material that is copyright free. It also teaches English to Thai speakers. The site is www.folte.org

I was in 2 minds whether to visit the website mentioned above, half expecting it to be another crappy attempt at a learn thai fast approach for a certain amount of money.

I was however, pleasantly surprised, seems to be some good material on there and nicely laid out. I think this website has a lot of potential and will pass the word about, thanks for the post.

Yes -I am also glad I checked out folte.org....seems great !    :Clap1:

Wait until you start seeing ร making different sounds than r or n and appearing as silent. Then you're really in for a head fuck.
