So I am sitting here on my couch like every other night after work. Except this night is special, or so I thought it should be. I am trying to purchase some tickets to BKK and get cock blocked by expedia. Yep, I said it, I am dropping dimes everywhere on them! Please take a look and tell me I am not the crazy one here?

I'd imagine that the airline had sold it's current allocation of discounted seats at that point, so probably not the fault of the booking agency.

Bloody annoying though.

Assuming you didn't go ahead and book the flight for 3k, just keep trying every day until another block of discounts is released, then hit the button really quickly...

Best of luck, how nice to be in a position to book a flight to LoS.

Cheers

Ouch! Thats a massive price hike. Advertising low fares then saying they are not available when you book is an old scam practiced by many agencies. The hotel room sellers do the same. Watch out for things like travel insurance and booking fees being added on automatically.

Expedia make the jet-ski guys look like saints!! i would never use expedia in the UK, there must be better options in the US? keep searching and good luck!

Next trip Aug 31-Sep13, theme: try more freelancers, get dirty! Note to self: TAKE MORE PHOTOS!!!

Sadly it's a common airline trick

Especially for airlines like AirAsia -- they will release a very small batch of cheap tickets and hope punters will take the more expensive ones

Good luck with the search -- and don't take shit

I understand the basics of what the business aspect is behind the airline industry. But I tried several different flights, and dates with American Airlines, and all kept raising the prices like this. Never have had a problem in the past, and I have flown quite a bit.

Clear the cookies on your computer. And try again. I had the same thing happen with me with a flight to Costa Rica. I cleared the cookies, and it worked.

Sometimes sites like Expedia will track your cookies, knowing you've been there before and raised the prices, and will up them.

I'm not sure I've ever seen it upped like this before.

Once I was booking a flight to Thailand, and the price came up 1418. I cleared my cookies, and entered in the exact same flight dates, and the price came up 1307. I booked that one.

You should also try Orbitz.

Did u try Skyscanner ?

Good advice.

Got caught once, myself.

On Airasia.

Actually depending on where you are located, you can file a complaint and they will have to cover the difference.

Expedia does not actually list anything, airline does.

It is instant confirmation, so changing the price after is illegal and if you contact relevant office, they will have to give the original price, otherwise its deceit and fraud.

By Expedia rules, if airline unable to honor the sale, they have to provide alternative or Expedia does.

So do not let this one slip away, providing you did click on "book" and do have an email with price

I've had that happen with both flights and hotels on that site as well as a few others (I believe partner sites).

I have always had good luck with Kayak.com.  Might try that and see what kind of luck you have.  They pretty much cover all the travel sites as well as direct sites (the airline and hotel sites) and give you pricing across the board.

A quick look on the net shows a Thai Airways flight on the same days for $1510 return.

Thai is an excellent airline and the flight is only 19 hours with a 1.5 hour stop over in Seoul. They use a Boeing 777 widebody jet which is a reasonable choice for a long haul.

Hope you can get this or better...have a great holiday.

Thanks for all the tips guys! I really do appreciate it. I am hoping to nail something down today. Its been over a year since I have been in LoS. My first trip I only saw BKK, Phuket, and Ayutthaya.

I use Kayak, as well -- as I recall, once you select the flights, it links you to the airline's website to complete the purchase.

For you Kayak users, have you ever payed any attention to the little price trends on the left hand side? Just wondering if anybody had any luck with that actually snagging the lower price. Mine says to wait, what do you guys say?

Here is a little snap shot with my iPhone.

Actually using kayak a lot. August flights lowest for long time was 880 with norwegian (add bag costs) rest 1000+

On Monday 11:45 I got alert that price of 670 was found. I booked and behold 2 hour later nowhere a flight under 1000+ to be found with my booked and confirmed flight now again being 1240

It is worth paying attention

Orbitz also does a few shitty moves.  I often get the "this package is no longer available" when selecting the lowest fares.  First time I saw this message, I though "fair enough, I just didn't pull the trigger fast enough".  However, if you run the same search again, the same package that is supposedly sold out shows up again.  Are they just trying to have people chase ghost itineraries in hopes that they'll give up and pay the higher rates?

That price change really sucks.

I live in Australia but was recommended to look at buying tickets for a recent trip via the Brazillian Expedia website.

When I looked it up I saw that the price at the time was about 20% cheaperfor my Australia to BKK return flights.

Perhaps look at other expedia websites for a better deal. I used expedia.com.br and had no problems with the tickets I purchased.

American Flight 169?  Hmmm, sounds suspicious from the on set.... 555

All joking aside.  All of the BM's offer great advice.  I also use Kayak, however there is another site I highly recommend called Hipmunk.com  Pay attention to the "agony" factor.  They determine this by price, length of flight, number of layovers, length of layover and times of flights.  A neat tool. Plus you can sort it by price or other factors as well.  You do not book with them but they will divert you to the other party.

I always check agoda.com, hipmunk.com, skyscanner.com, and the airlines themselves.  Sounds time consuming but not too bad when you can save $100-1000 or even more.

Happy hunting

I have heard good about Thai Airways, but what is so special? Free booze on the flight or something?

Now THAT would be a nice flight!!

Thanks man, that agony factor is most definitely something to consider. I'll be damned if I take one of those 35 hour journeys to get to LOS.

................

I don’t know where you normally fly but I have been using budget airlines so these things are special to me.

  • Yes you get free booze on the flight.
  • You also get meals.
  • The seats are 19inch wide and they recline. (Air asia has 16 inch seats)
  • They have better than 6 to 1 ratio of hostesses

And if thats not enough

2-Hosties.jpg

You can book on line direct through Thai for about $1510.

If I had the choice I would fly this way all the time. I might upgrade to premium economy .

After that picture, I think I have made my decision. HAHAHA.

Thank you!

BTW: Do you guys prefer to book through the actual airline's website, or through a middle man like expedia, kayak, etc.? Not sure its really even makes a difference?

Posted

I use priceline...  and I also use united because their site will show me the fares over a month's time so I can pick the lowest if it works for me.  will check out hipmunk

Posted

I hate when that happens.  Luckily, I'm seeing prices around 1050USD for a flight out there, which is pretty good because before it was showing 1500, which was what I was expecting to pay, so now flight and hotel and transit together will probably be 1500 or less unless the price just skyrockets for some reason like yours did.

Hopefully you're able to find another site or discounted fair somewhere.  Maybe you can try hitting up a travel agent.  They can work wonders sometimes.

PI junkie looking forward to his first hit of Pattaya
