Went to singapore on train from Bangkok, stopped off at Penang to break journey, train ride was interesting for a while but overall boring, scenery not great, go through mile after mile of rubber plantations

Is there a Thai consulate in Penang this would be closer than KL.

Penang ok for a few days KL was not so exciting just a big city but believe there are mongoring bars.  Liked the food in Malaysia and the people were nice, spoke more English than Thais

Penang has a Thai embassy. Have renewed there before and fairly easy to do. The train as I have been told is an interesting, but boring trip, so I flew. Train also heads throughout the south, which perhaps right now is not one of the more stable area's for travel in Thailand.

It's certainly not like Pattaya in Penang, but it does have it's own bar scene and actually it was an enjoyable trip as well as being able to have the visa taken care of..

It's not about what you got.. It's all about what you can still get!

Have gone as far as Yala by train many times  its okay trains are slow though occasionally break down.

Take some warm clothes it gets cold at night with the aircon on all the time in the carriage, head to the dining car for food think its better myself,Get a good view from there best to go about 1 hour before sunset,
