Anyone heard of what I caught in Pattaya?

I used to constantly get a bad throat when visiting Pattaya.

What worked for me was taking vitamins (multi vitamins, vitamin C, vitamin B), gargling frequently with Listerine, washing my hands often and buying a fan, that I used at night instead of the aircon.

I left the fan in the hotel store room, and used it again on my next visit.

Has anyone heard of Faliraki Flu? Both times I went there (In Rhodes) I ended up with a cold - even though my hotel room did not have aircon. The term Faliraki Flu was talked about a lot.

The first thing I do when I get to my hotel room is clean the air con filters.  They are really easy to take out and are always absolutely filthy.

This was suggested by a mate who fits AC units as the cause of my cough.  Never had it since I have done this.

If it flies, floats or fucks - it will be cheaper to rent !

I have had this problem in the past . How I deal with this is to open the aircon and clean the filters . I also leave my balcony door open a few inches to let fresh air in at night . Hope this helps .

Pop up the front cover, it usually folds upwards.

Inside are normally 2 black plastic frames with like a ,mesh on them.  They are sort of curved around the cooling fins and are about 15" by 12".

Take them into the bathroom and wash them out using the bum gun (usually more powerful than the shower or tap).  Give them a shake dry then slide them back into position and close the front down.

Hm

Well, open the cover, it will lift up from the bottom, you should be able to run your fingers along the bottom and feel a recess. Pull up and outwards on the meshed cover.Don't be shy.The filters will be the meshy looking things right in front of you.

Slide them down and out, you will see how they are contained by some, usually plastic guides at each side. They will have a permanent concave shape to them. And, if they are a Pompem, they will be clogged with fine particles and hard to see through.

It's easy. hit them with the shower head, from the opposite side on which they were installed, or with the spray hose from the crapper. So by that I mean hit them in the same direction as the air flow would be into your room.

Bang them dry and reinstall.

If it's an old style aircon, then look for the intake vent, it should have some pins holding it closed. This will be, most probably, located behind where the aircon pushes cold air into the room.Push the pins back and the vent cover will open, exposing the filters (screens).

Same, same.

I always get sick when leaving pattaya..p*** off and depressed its over lol!!

On a helpful note I fond on the web 3 oils that are supposed to be marked for sinus problems, "sinus doctor", you put these in a steam bath an wow it works for me, a interesting sideline being a combination of natural antibiotics, it works very very well for colds. Thinking that a boiling saucepan / kettle under the dirty aircon would may be knock out the pathogens in filter / evap coil?

guess staying at this hotel is out of the question for me

In most Asian cities maintenance is an unknown concept. They run air-conditioners until they break down. Just stop and listen to the rattle of those things...

I use the a/c very sparingly, and never all through the night. A small fan is better for keeping your hotel room cool in the tropical heat.

I have gotten this on my last two trips, (including this trip I'm on right now) this time I went to pattaya memorial hospital. They a swab and tested, came back as streptococcal sore throat (known colloquially as strep throat) is a type of pharyngitis caused by a group A streptococca. It affects the pharynx including the tonsils and possibly the larynx. Common symptoms include fever, sore throat, and enlarged lymph nodes.

Strep throat is caused by group A beta-hemolytic streptococcus. Other bacteria such as non–group A beta-hemolytic streptococci and fusobacterium may also cause pharyngitis. It is spread by direct, close contact with an infected person and thus crowding as may be found in beer bars, go gos and aircraft increases the rate of transmission. It has been found that dried bacteria in dust are not infectious, although moist bacteria on toothbrushes, aircon! or similar items can persist for up to fifteen days. Rarely, contaminated food can result in outbreaks.

Treatment:

Analgesics such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and paracetamol (acetaminophen) help significantly in the management of pain associated with strep throat.

Aspirin may be used in adults but is not recommended in children due to the risk of Reye's syndrom

Antibiotics

The antibiotic of choice in the United States for streptococcal pharyngitis is penicillin V due to safety, cost, and effectiveness. Amoxicillin is preferred in Europe. Appropriate antibiotics decrease the average 3–5 day duration of symptoms by about one day, and also reduce contagiousness.

You need to know precisely what you have so you take the Antibiotics in the right way, right dose, right duration.  You should go to a proper dr at a proper hospital and get a proper diagnosis................Always.  By not taking antibiotics  correctly you weaken your own personal immunity and that of the community at large.  That is US!!!!!!!!!!!!

I went to PMH for a upper respiratory problem. After the treatment didn't work I went to a western doctor who was somewhat confused that I wasn't give any antibiotics. Medical care in LOS can sometimes be a bit like anything else (TiT). YMMV, maybe I was just unlucky.

Did your voice also become Hoarse?

Where you drinking your beer out of bottles as most of us do?

Very often excessive drinking from bottles can strain the throat muscles leading to a sore throat and hoarse voice.
