Foreigner Arrested After Reselling Rented Cars

A foreigner claimed that he had contacts with Police commanders and other high ranked police men when he asked to rent a Toyota Camry car. As soon as he rented out the car, he fled and never came back with the car. He confessed that he did steal car and that the rented was already sold.

SURATHANI – May 24,2013 [PDN]; At around 07.00 AM, Police officers of Pattaya Police were able to arrest 38 year-old Olaf Herbert, a German national. He has been reported to steal and sell a rented Toyota car. He was arrested in Pattaya but then was flown to Samui, the place where he committed the crime.

The case on the stolen car was reported to the police on July 28 of last year in Samui Island by 34 year-old Mrs. Purida Sanguannam, who owns a large car-rent company in Samui. She told the media and police that one of her cars was stolen by a certain Olaf Herbert. She said that she rented out a Toyota Camry car for 2,000 THB per day to Mr. Olaf, she trusted him after he showed her pictures of well-known police officers and commanders that he took with them.

Mr. Olaf Herbert often claimed that he was rich and that he usually stays at the homes of the police commanders he talked about. He also claimed that he was a voluntary police man and that his job was to translate and help the Surathani police officers. After he took Mrs. Purida’s car, he went into hiding, no one was able to contact him, up until he was arrested on the 24th of May.

Mr. Olaf did confess his crime and also confessed that he did sell the to a Thai person in Chon Buri province. Police are now escalating the case, to see whether he is linked to a car thievery gang or not. He will now be prosecuted by the Police.
